New Zealand NPC: Round 6 - Canterbury keep unbeaten run alive and win Shield off Southland

Canterbury’s 54–14 demolition of Southland not only secured the Shield, but also reinforced their unbeaten dominance as the red and blacks open a seven-point lead at the top of the standings. Bay of Plenty produced a dazzling attacking display to humble Taranaki, while Hawke’s Bay bounced back with a statement victory over Wellington in Napier.

With six rounds gone, the table is beginning to split with Canterbury setting the pace. Bay of Plenty and Otago continue to chase hard, with several sides fighting desperately to keep their seasons alive.

Counties Manukau snatched their first win of the season with a late Gibson Popoali’i penalty sealing a tense 22–19 victory over North Harbour. After conceding early penalties to trail 0–6, Counties replied through Tevita Ofa’s try, only for Harbour halfback Luke Campbell to strike back from a tap penalty.

The home side regained momentum in the second half, Leo Ngatai-Tafau crashing over before Tima Fainga’anuku hit back for Harbour. With the scores locked at 19–19, Popoali’i broke through for a crucial try, then coolly landed a long-range penalty three minutes from time to clinch the win.

Otago battled back from conceding an early length-of-the-field intercept try to Northland’s Terrell Peita, eventually powering to a 29–10 win. Flanker Will Stoddart levelled matters after good work from lock Will Tucker, sending the sides into halftime locked at 7–7.

After Rob Rush’s yellow card, wing Jae Broomfield crossed to push Otago in front, before Casey Lucas produced a solo stunner from a broken lineout. Replacement halfback Nathan Hastie iced the result, while Northland could only add a solitary Rivez Reihana penalty to Peita’s opener. Cameron Millar’s steady boot helped guide Otago into second place on the table.

Hawke’s Bay stormed back into form with a 45–19 dismantling of Wellington in Tom Parsons’ 100th appearance. Miracle Fai’ilagi opened the scoring before Parsons himself powered over. Lukas Ripley and Jonah Lowe added tries either side of halftime, while replacements Andrew Tauatevalu and Cooper Flanders also struck late.

Wellington showed flashes through Stanley Solomon’s slick finish, Tjay Clarke’s solo effort and Esi Komasaisavai’s 70m breakout, but they couldn’t contain the Bay’s variety and set-piece strength. With six different try scorers and Harry Godfrey’s composed kicking, the Magpies reasserted themselves as serious playoff contenders.

Manawatū stunned Waikato 36–26 with a dazzling mix of forward power and opportunism. Mosese Bason opened the scoring before Taine Roiri bagged a brace, while wings Taniela Filimone and Kyle Brown also struck. Fullback Drew Wild sealed the win with a late try after pulling the strings throughout.

Waikato replied through Rui Farrant, Dan Sinkinson, Gideon Wrampling and Sean Ralph, with Aaron Cruden converting three, but they couldn’t match the Turbos’ accuracy. Jordi Viljoen’s clever break to set up Roiri’s second was pivotal as Manawatū controlled the key moments to earn a famous home win.

Canterbury retained their unbeaten record and claimed the Ranfurly Shield in emphatic fashion, thrashing Southland 54–14. The red-and-blacks were irresistible, with Dallas McLeod and Louie Chapman each scoring doubles, while Corey Kellow, Dom Gardiner, Jamie Hannah and George Bell also touched down.

Southland had fleeting joy through Jack Taylor and Sam Fischli, but were completely overpowered up front. James White converted seven tries as Canterbury controlled the match from start to finish, underlining their dominance of the competition.

Bay of Plenty produced one of the performances of the round, dispatching Taranaki 43–17 away from home. Ngahori McGarvey-Black set the tone before Richard Judd, Naitoa Ah Kuoi and a powerhouse Fine Fineangonofo brace established a huge halftime lead. Fineangonofo completed his hat-trick in the closing stages, with Semisi Paea and Lucas Cashmore also adding points.

Taranaki replied through Adam Lennox and Hemopo Cunningham, with Josh Jacomb kicking two conversions and a penalty, but they were never in contention. Kaleb Trask and Cashmore directed matters smartly off the tee as Bay made a statement.

Auckland finally claimed their first win of the season, edging Tasman 29–21 in a thrilling contest. No8 Sam Hainsworth-Fa’aofo’s early double gave them a platform, before Tasman hit back via Macca Springer and Tomasi Maka to lead at halftime.

Levi Aumua crossed from a scrum move to extend the advantage, but Auckland unleashed a brilliant backline movement that sent Caleb Tangitau clear. Caleb Clarke then muscled over from a maul to seal victory, with Rico Simpson and Xavi Taele adding crucial kicks. William Havili kept Tasman in touch with three conversions, but the Mako fell just short.
