National League Recap: Round 2 - Derby delight as Camborne bag Cornish bragging rights

Moseley overturned a 21-9 halftime deficit with a devastating six-try second-half blitz. Director of Rugby Adam Balding’s words in the changing room clearly lit a spark, as winger Mason Tonks and hooker Ryan Roach crossed in quick succession. Leicester Lions had looked sharp in the first period, but Moseley’s superior power and tempo told as they pulled away for a bonus-point win.

A thriller at The Utilita ended with new signing Ed Dunford holding his nerve to land a last-kick penalty. Hooker Billy Harding’s hat-trick had put Blackheath in command, but Stortford fought back through Harrison Langworthy’s late converted try. Just as the visitors thought they had snatched it, Dunford — who had missed four earlier conversions — delivered the decisive blow in dramatic fashion.

Albion were rampant at Brickfields, running in 10 tries to delight nearly 1,500 fans. The backline looked razor sharp with Alex Ducker grabbing a brace, while fly-half Connor Eastgate dictated play beautifully. Clifton could only muster a solitary score in reply as Plymouth cemented their status as early-season title contenders with another statement victory.

Rams recorded their highest ever National League score, running in 11 tries against Dings. Seven of those came in a blistering second-half display, with winger Henry Bird bagging a double. Dings showed some enterprise, notching four tries of their own, but they couldn’t cope with Rams’ ruthless continuity and relentless tempo.

The Titans were clinical on home turf, eventually pulling clear after a competitive first half. Joe Rowntree steered the attack superbly and hooker Joe Duffy helped himself to two tries as Rotherham bagged eight in total. Leeds Tykes showed grit but faded as Rotherham’s power and depth shone through.

A bruising Manchester derby was shaded by Sedgley thanks to a composed first-half performance. Centre Zane Ainslie crossed for a brilliant individual try and their defensive resilience proved enough despite a late Sale surge. Nathan Langdon’s late try earned Sale two bonus points but Sedgley took the bragging rights.

Rosslyn Park’s professionalism carried them through in Kent as they secured a gritty away win. Despite Juddians’ effort in running in three tries, Park’s forward dominance and sharp edge in the backs gave them the edge. Tries from Hugo Ellis and Craig Holland proved crucial as last year’s runners-up made it back-to-back wins.

Over 1,100 fans witnessed a North-East derby classic. Tynedale blew DMP away in the first half with incisive attacking play, and despite a late flurry of home tries, the visitors held on. Both sides bagged six tries, but Tyne’s composure under pressure secured bragging rights in their first meeting since 2015.

A superb second-half comeback saw Billingham overturn an early deficit. Wharfedale had looked in control at 13-0, but the hosts rallied through tries from Liam Larkin and Craig Smith. A late penalty sealed the deal as Billingham notched their first win of the season.

The derby honours went to Hull Ionians, who impressed with a five-try display. Their set-piece dominance gave them the edge, with winger Tom Collins also bagging a brace. Hull responded gamely with three tries, but the I’s are beginning to look a real force.

Otley cut loose with nine tries in a one-sided contest. Hooker Tom Howard stole the show with a hat-trick as Otley claimed their first victory of the season. Scunthorpe, though spirited, simply had no answer to the pace and precision of the hosts.

Fylde extended their dominance over old rivals with a 10th straight win in the fixture. Scrum-half Gabe Maguire was at the heart of everything, scoring a try and setting up another. Hoppers pushed hard but couldn’t find the killer blow in a see-saw contest.

An absolute try-fest saw Macclesfield edge Rossendale in a 13-try shootout. The visitors’ backs were clinical, with winger Matt King bagging a brace. Rossendale never gave up but Macc’s composure in key moments saw them prevail.

The Steel City derby belonged to Sheffield, whose physical pack laid the foundations for victory. Fly-half Ollie Bartlett pulled the strings and the visitors ran in five tries to silence the home crowd.

Barnes and Henley shared the spoils in a tense contest. Both sides crossed twice, with Henley missing a late conversion that would have sealed victory. The result felt fair after an evenly matched arm wrestle.

Oundle celebrated a remarkable first win at this level in an end-to-end contest. Taylor Gourlay and Rian Hamilton struck late as the visitors turned the game on its head. Bury had looked set for victory with five tries of their own but were left stunned.

The Kent derby produced fireworks as Canterbury rallied from 17-0 down. Winger Tom Williams stole the show with a hat-trick, inspiring his side to an extraordinary five-point victory. Sevenoaks left with two bonus points but little consolation.

Dorking impressed away from home, their pace and precision seeing them run in five tries. Guernsey kept battling but the visitors always had an extra gear, ensuring a deserved victory.

Wes Dugan marked his 100th cap with a try as Havant ran riot. The home crowd enjoyed an 11-try demolition, with the backline running amok. Oxford Harlequins never gave up but were simply blown away.

Asa Stewart-Harris was the hero for OAs, crossing in the 78th minute to snatch victory. London Welsh had fought valiantly and seemed poised for the win, but OAs’ late composure turned the tide.

In another thriller, Esher mounted a late charge. Fergus Donnelly’s try in the final minute tied the game, before Oli Burgess slotted the winning penalty to complete a stunning comeback.

Nearly 3,000 packed into the Rec for a fierce Cornish derby. Camborne dominated the first half, with No.8 Sam Stevens powering over to set the tone. Redruth improved after the break, but the damage was done as Camborne secured bragging rights once again.

The students continued their fine start, pulling clear with three quickfire second-half tries. Barnstaple competed well, notching four scores of their own, but Exeter’s fitness and flair proved decisive.

Hookers Tom Haywood and Dale Bowyer stole the headlines by scoring five tries between them. Hinckley’s set-piece dominance underpinned their win, while Loughborough’s young side showed glimpses of promise.

Hornets ran riot in Weston-super-Mare, running in nine tries. Winger Josh Sheppard’s hat-trick stole the spotlight, while Taunton were left chasing shadows despite notching three scores.

Lymm edged an exciting contest, their first-half control proving vital. Chester rallied hard after the break, but a late defensive stand preserved the home side’s narrow victory.

Cinderford showed remarkable resilience, overturning a 19-point deficit and two yellow cards to claim victory. Jonny Holliday’s late try and a Luke McMahon drop goal completed the stunning turnaround.

Luctonians captain Ben Link led from the front with a hat-trick as the visitors pulled clear of spirited newcomers Syston. Both sides played expansive rugby in a high-scoring clash, but Lucs had the extra edge.
