"Moved on" - Stephen Larkham keeps Brumbies grounded after dream Super Rugby start

The match also revisits last year’s clash at Eden Park, where the Brumbies ended a 12-year drought with a breakthrough triumph over the Blues.

They dismantled the reigning champions 50-24 in Christchurch on Sunday, aided by a try from prop James Slipper in his 200th appearance in Super Rugby.

Under Larkham, the Brumbies were ruthless against the Crusaders, containing a star-laden attack to claim a second straight bonus point win and move to the top of the Super Rugby table.

However, the head coach has stressed that his team are keeping their feet on the ground despite their impressive start.

"It's a once every 26-year result for us on the weekend so you've certainly got to enjoy that. We didn't have a lot of time, we had an afternoon game over there but we were up at 1:30 Australian time in the morning to get our flight back so it was a fairly congested 24 hours post-game. So, there wasn't a lot of celebration and it's a six day turnaround for us into the Blues.

"Like the first round where the score was very favourable against the Force, 50 points in any game is a good result, we're not getting carried away with ourselves. It's the second round of the competition and those points came late in both games, there was a lot of hard work leading up to that point and it'll be the same this weekend. We've moved on from it fairly quickly."

The win was achieved without key figures including Tom Wright, who is sidelined with a knee injury, and captain Allan Alaalatoa, who is dealing with a back issue. Fellow Wallabies Len Ikitau, Noah Lolesio and Tom Hooper also departed during the off-season.

“We looked at a number of things yesterday in our review,” he said.

“If you have a look at the aerial contest, we didn’t really get challenged because the wind was so strong on the weekend.

“But this year, we’ve seen a change of that kicking in to more contestable kicks, so we’re expecting that battle to come this weekend. So that’s certainly an area that we want to be better in.”

Larkham admitted there had been uncertainty heading into the opening round following trial defeats to the Waratahs and Force.

Those concerns have quickly faded after the Brumbies racked up 106 points across their first two games.

“There was a bit of doubt going into the first round out the back of the trials, in terms of where we are going to sit with all of these changes and experienced players that we lost,” he said.

“We’ve certainly spoken about connection and the ability to play the way that we’re playing.

“We put a lot of emphasis on the fact that connection is really key.”
