Michael Cheika has been replaced as Argentina boss with immediate effect

The 46-year-old will be stepping into the shoes of the esteemed Michael Cheika, former head coach of Leinster and Australia, who guided the Pumas to the semi-finals in the recent Rugby World Cup in France.

Contepomi, who was previously part of Cheika's coaching team, expressed his eagerness to build upon the foundation laid by his predecessor. Speaking on his appointment, he stated: "I had the honour of assisting Michael Cheika in the implementation of a sporting project that challenged and excited us as part of a great Argentine rugby team,

"For this reason I accept the opportunity bestowed on me by the UAR (Argentine Rugby Union) to continue working towards the desired goal, the 2027 World Cup in Australia," he said.

Cheika backed his successor, adding that he was confident that Contepomi and his staff would "lead the team forward in the best way".

Contepomi, a seasoned international player with 87 caps for Argentina and four World Cup appearances, brings a wealth of experience to his new role at the helm of the Pumas.
