Following an unimpressive debut off the bench last weekendpres, the Welsh winger was thrown straight into the thick of the action as Bristol Bears faced their West Country rivals in the Premiership Rugby Cup at Kingsholm.
It took just 22 minutes for Rees-Zammit to cross the whitewash against his former employers, latching onto a slick offload from Toby Baker before gassing Jake Morris on the outside.
He even tossed the ball skyward in celebration, only to be met with a chorus of boos from the Shed that once cheered him.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The 24-year-old flier blotted his copybook with a glaring knock-on just 10 metres from the line after a trademark chip-and-chase looked certain to deliver another try.
Moments later, the contest boiled over. Rees-Zammit clashed with fellow Welshman Caio Jones, the pair exchanging words, shoves, and plenty of verbals before both were shown yellow cards.
Kingsholm revelled in taunting their old hero, but Rees-Zammit kept himself in the game, showing flashes of the electric pace that once made him one of the most feared wingers in Europe.
His evening ended on a more respectful note, however, as the home crowd rose to applaud him when he was replaced by Max Pepper on 56 minutes.
After 18 months chasing the NFL dream across the pond, Rees-Zammit looks leaner, sharper, and ready for the Gallagher Premiership season to kick off next weekend.
