Louis Rees-Zammit: Did wing quit NFL too soon or is Autumn the perfect time for a Wales return?

His recent injury adds to the initial concern of critics: is he ready to return to rugby or does he need to re-adjust?

Zammit was inspired to make the move to American football by his father, Joe Rees-Zammit, who played for the Cardiff Bay Tigers and influenced Louis to take an interest in the sport from a young age. After training to become a wide receiver during the 2024 International Player Pathway, Rees-Zammit got a few runabouts with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars training squads, but wasn’t once picked to play during the regular-season NFL game.

In July, he made the announcement that he would be returning to the UK to play rugby once again after realising that he was “wasting his talent” in the NFL. As of August 2025, he signed a contract to play with Bristol Bears for the newly re-branded 2025/26 PREM Rugby season.

The winger even admitted in several interviews that he was returning to rugby union “bigger and faster” than ever before after experiencing the “brutal” side of American football. However, during the PREM Rugby game on Saturday at StoneX Stadium, the Welshman suffered a toe injury and found himself unable to finish the game which ended in a 50-17 defeat to Saracens.

Prior to this injury, in a BBC interview Shane Williams mentioned Rees-Zammit to be a “massive asset for Wales” and said, “He is a superstar player, just look at the tries he scored and what he did for Wales in that short period of time.

"He will probably take a bit of time to get back into the swing of things with rugby union because it has changed in the last 12 months…”

It was initially expected that Rees-Zammit would return to his original home club of Gloucester or join a Welsh regional squad, but sources reported that Welsh regions would have been "blown out of the water" by Rees-Zammit's expected wage demands. His time in America only increased his already high profile and market value as he took on multiple brand deals upon his brief time 'stateside'. That, and the recent findings that drastic changes could be occurring to the Welsh regional game due to a lack of funding, meant that Rees-Zammit wasn’t offered a spot by a Welsh team.

Despite this, former Wales international, Alex Cuthbert, says that Rees-Zammit is ready to step back into the Autumn Nations Series squad for Wales. Having not long broken their 18-loss streak this past Summer against Japan, Wales are desperate for experienced players to return to the national squad. Many believe Rees-Zammit’s brief venture to the side of NFL stint was unexpected and that rugby has always been where he belongs, namely on the Welsh team.

TalkSPORT's senior US reporter Brian Smith, even went as far as saying that Rees-Zammit’s time spent playing American football “never made sense.”

He told talkSPORT, "I've done a lot of stories. He seems like a nice guy. It always seemed like rugby was the right fit for him. It never really made sense and honestly, it felt like a little bit more of a media stunt.”

So, all that is needed now is for Rees-Zammit to recover from injury and proves that his return to his (grass) roots was indeed the right thing to do.
