Whether they have moved to compete for trophies or boost their chances of winning international honours, the majority of players have a big say in the team that they are transferred to.

Despite this, a number of high profile rugby players have found themselves frustrated at their new team and actually regret ever making their dream move (if they go through with it at all).

Here are five examples of players whose high profile transfer to a new team has not worked out as planned.

Regretted this move so much he never made it.

In November 2017, the back-row forward became the first confirmed arrival by Gloucester for the 2017/18 season with director of rugby David Humphreys saying the signing was “a statement of intent” from the Cherry and Whites.

However, in March 2017 there were reports in France emerged that Lyon were trying to convince Fearns to sign a new deal with them. Gloucester responded by releasing a statement, saying that they turned down an approach from Lyon to release Fearns from his contract.

Then in April it was reported in the national press that it is “unlikely” that  the number 8 will play for Gloucester next season. There were even reports that England head coach Eddie Jones had got involved to convince Fearns to join Gloucester but he was unsuccessful.

Finally, in June, it was confirmed that Fearns would not be joining Gloucester and will stay at Lyon. CEO Stephen Vaughan said: "Naturally the club took the best legal advice on the situation, but as soon as it became apparent the player wanted to remain in France efforts immediately turned to get the best possible deal for the club to allow us to move on in a stronger position."

In October 2016, Ashton left Saracens 2017 to join Toulon in the Top 14. His single season in France was an outstanding success but would result in Eddie Jones wanting Ashton to return to the Premiership to make him eligiable for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

This led to the speedster wanting out. Now regretting his long-term contract he was lucky Sale Sharks bought him out of his deal and give him a chance to reignite his international career.

On 3 July 2018, it was confirmed that Ashton was to return to his native country, with the 31-year-old scoring a hat-trick on his debut for the Salford based club before securing his recall to the England squad for the 2018 Autumn Internationals.

On 27 October 2010, Ospreys released a statement from Managing Director, Mike Cuddy, stating that Henson would be released from his contract with the province with immediate effect, and that he would be returning to rugby with the English club Saracens.

Henson had not played professional Rugby for 18 months before this announcement following his period of unpaid leave from the Ospreys.

His agent, Matt Ginvert, stated that Henson will return to Rugby after completing his commitments with the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing programme, and Saracens chief executive Edward Griffiths said that he saw no reason why Henson would not compete for the club before Christmas 2010.

The Wales international signed for Saracens in October 2010, making his debut at Wembley Stadium in the Boxing Day 2010 match against London Wasps; his first competitive game since March 2009.

After playing four games for Saracens, starting only one, Henson was released from his contract on 2 February 2011. Henson had commented while at Saracens that he was frustrated not to be playing in his preferred position. A pretty disappointing and regrettable choice for what was meant to be a grand comeback.

The flanker/centre (we're still not sure) didn't just regret his transfer to Bath but his transfer to the sport.

He was signed by the Blue, Black and Whites on a three-year contract, starting from October 2014.

Just 12 months later, following his involvement in England's embarrassing Rugby World Cup campaign, he left the sport and Bath, opting to return to South Sydney Rabbitohs, signing a three-year contract, approximately worth $1.5m AUD per season.

Wales international Gareth Delve left the Ospreys a year early in 2016 after getting just 56 minutes of game-time in the campaign.

The 33-year-old back-rower, who had captained Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby and Gloucester in the Aviva Premiership, seemed to be an astute capture when he signed a two-year contract to return home from Japanese club NEC Green Rockets.

But the 11-times capped forward failed to make an impression, making this a move to regret.
