Marcus Smith has made one thing clear: he’s not giving up the No.10 shirt without a fight.
The 26-year-old Harlequins magician has been England’s fullback experiment of choice, but that hasn’t dented his fly-half ambitions. Speaking with
The Telegraph, Smith revealed:
“I am not shy in saying I want to play at 10. I grew up idolising Jonny Wilkinson and Dan Carter—I want to emulate them.”

Fly-half? Fullback? Smith just wants to play
Smith isn’t about to kick up a fuss. While No.10 is where his heart lies, he’s embracing the challenge of being a utility back.
“It’s a blessing that I can cover multiple positions,” Smith admitted. “Whatever position I’m in, I’ll give everything I have.”

The England star is taking a leaf out of Damian McKenzie’s book—the All Blacks livewire who’s made a name for himself as a backfield Swiss army knife.
“Damian is extremely talented,” said Smith. “It’s a credit to him that he can seamlessly drop in at 10 or 15. I’ve played against him and he’s a nightmare to analyse.”
Lions bound?
While his time in the 15 jersey divided opinion, it may have done just enough to boost his Lions stock. Smith is reportedly in the mix for Andy Farrell’s 38-man squad for the 2025 tour to Australia.
Whether it’s at fly-half or fullback, one thing’s certain—Marcus Smith just wants to be in the fight.
