Stuart Lancaster's first 5 England debutants. Where are they now?

Unfortunately, England was eliminated at the pool stage, after defeats by Wales and Australia; this was the first time in the tournament’s history that a solo host nation failed to progress to the knockout stages.

Three of his first call-ups ended up playing at that World Cup while the other two only enjoyed short stints in the England shirt.

The flanker was one of three debutants selected by Lancaster for his first Test match, which came on a summer tour against South Africa in 2012.

Johnson, who became the first Exeter player to play for England since Martin Underwood in 1964, played all three tests of the tour but would go onto only win eight caps in total.

It all started all too well, but it didn't last

Harlequins prop Marler won his first three senior England caps against South Africa during 2012 summer tour, after previously being capped at England U18 and U20 level. By the time he made 42nd international appearance against France in March 2016 he had missed only four matches since his debut on the way to becoming a Grand Slam winner.

The prop withdrew from the subsequent summer tour of Australia and took a break from the game before leading out England for his 50th cap in their stunning victory over Scotland in March 2017. Three months later, Joe was part of the British & Irish Lions squad for their tour of New Zealand and was a regular for the Lions in their midweek games.

He announced his international retirement in September 2018 to spend more time with his family, but has since reversed this decision.

Marler has had his fair share of controversies down the years, but he's established himself as an England legend nevertheless.

A scintillating hat-trick in the space of 18 minutes against Italy in February 2016 confirmed Joseph’s boundless capabilities in a Test environment.

He went on to win selection for the 2017 British & Irish Lions in New Zealand and was a try-scorer in his second game against the Highlanders.

The outside-centre has also won the 2017 Six Nations with England and came on as a replacement in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final against South Africa.

A very good player for England down the years.

The 35-year-old earned five caps for England between 2012 and 2013 and won a first Premiership title with the Leicester Tigers in the same year.

He enjoyed his greatest success with the Exeter Chiefs, winning the Premiership in 2016-17 and topping the list of leading try-scorers in 2015 and 2016.

Waldrom never let England down on the pitch, but gis international career was ended by the emergence of big Billy Vunipola.

In 2019, Goode should have spent all summer basking in the glory of his most successful season to date: a Champions Cup and Gallagher Premiership double with Saracens, as well as the European Player of the Year gong.

The fullback was not included in England's 31-man squad for the World Cup in Japan, nor was he included in the wider training squad that was named in June. How Goode won just 25 caps is baffling.
