Despite missing out on selection for the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia this year, former England prop Kyle Sinckler is still playing a key role — just off the pitch.

Sinckler has joined Sky Sports’ punditry team, bringing his frontline insight to the Lions coverage this summer. At 32, the former tighthead’s presence on the broadcast team comes amid concerns over the Lions’ “tighthead crisis,” with injuries forcing call-ups and doubts hanging over key players.

Rugby journalist Stephen Jones recently described the situation as a “near-catastrophe,” highlighting Zander Fagerson’s withdrawal and Tadhg Furlong’s fitness issues, as well as the less-than-ideal alternatives currently available.

With Sinckler watching closely, it’s not hard to imagine he’s keeping his phone handy in case Andy Farrell’s staff need emergency cover.

Meanwhile, Owen Farrell, also left out of the Lions squad, will be joining Sinckler on the Sky Sports punditry team, marking his first major foray into media after years of commanding attention on the field and in front of the cameras.

Farrell’s career isn’t finished yet, though. The former England captain remains in the mix for a Lions recall, especially if his ongoing recovery goes well. With his contract covering just the Argentina warm-up match, there’s a clear path for Farrell to join the touring squad in Australia — should dad and Lions head coach Andy Farrell decide to bring him back into the fold.

2. George Ford (England)

Despite being a standout fly-half for England and earning 99 caps, George Ford was notably absent from the 2017, 2021, and 2025 Lions tours. His consistent performances and tactical acumen were often overshadowed by contemporaries like Owen Farrell and Marcus Smith. In 2025, Ford was in contention but was ultimately not selected for the tour to Australia.

3. Chris Paterson (Scotland)

Scotland's record points scorer with 809 points and second most-capped player with 109 caps, Chris Paterson's versatility in playing fullback, wing, and fly-half made him a valuable asset. Despite his contributions, he was never selected for a Lions tour.

4. Peter Stringer (Ireland)

With 98 international caps, Peter Stringer was a stalwart for Ireland, known for his quick service and tactical kicking.Despite his consistent performances, he was overlooked for the 2001 and 2005 Lions tours.

5. Simon Geoghegan (Ireland)

Renowned for his electrifying pace and agility, Simon Geoghegan was a standout winger for Ireland. Despite his impressive try-scoring record, he was controversially omitted from the 1993 Lions tour to New Zealand and missed out on the 1997 tour due to injury.

6. Joe Launchbury (England)

A reliable lock with over 60 caps for England, Joe Launchbury's career was marred by unfortunate timing. He was ruled out of the 2013 and 2017 Lions tours due to injuries and was also unavailable for the 2021 tour, missing out on what could have been a prime opportunity.
