Jones responds to calls for Owen Farrell to be replaced as captain

Lawrence Dallaglio, who captained England on 22 occasions, said that while he admired Farrell as a “warrior and champion”, insists the fly-half is currently not “the best person” to lead Jones side.

However, the Aussie is confident that Farrell is still the right man for the job heading into the final two rounds of the Six Nations..

“We’re happy with the way he is going but like any part of our organisation he can improve,” said Jones.

“He can improve in the way he leads the team.

“But we are all open to that sort of scrutiny. Owen is still learning to be a good captain, there is no doubt about that. And it is a hard art and you have got to keep developing.

“Every experience he has will make him a better captain. I’ve worked with a number of good captains and they have all had their own way of doing it.

“John Smit at the Springboks was a real people’s person, [former Australia captain] George Gregan on the other hand was very much more like Owen.”

Former England start Kyran Bracken was the first person to reveal why the Quins playmaker was mysteriously frozen out of Jones plans in 2018 despite being a regular up until that point.

"He (Care) made the mistake of speaking his mind to Eddie Jones and questioning how he wanted him to play when he was playing with an England ‘B’ team against Japan in the autumn of 2018," said Bracken.

"Eddie’s response to that was ‘that’s not the attitude I want’ and he binned him from his plans."

This story was later backed up by England and Harlequins teammate Mike Brown.

Interestingly, the Northampton Saints flanker managed to clash with Jones before the pair even met. Nine months after Jones branded the back-rower 'distinctly average', he made a shock return to the England fold in 2016.

Wood never let anybody down, but with the 2019 World Cup on the horizon it seemed strange to bring him back into the fold after initially writing him off. It was reported at the time that he was dumped from the squad without a phone call..

The pair clashed over Eddie Jones controversial autobiography.

“He said more about me in a book than he’s ever said to me. That’s all I know,” Cipriani told The Times. 

"He’s never said two words to me but I found out everything I need to know from him through a book."

“How many times have I been turned down to play for England? It’s crazy. Was my intention right? I don’t know. I always felt like it was but perhaps it was giving off the wrong meaning to people.

“My intention to play for England might have been for self, for ego, or to prove people wrong. I don’t know fully until I let that go, which, in the last couple of weeks, I have.

“When I say let it go, it doesn’t mean I don’t want to do it but I’m in a much better frame of mind about it.”

Brown wrote in his column: 'I'd had one of my best seasons for Quins (2018/19) with really good attacking stats (2019), but Eddie had pigeon-holed me as a defensive full-back. At the end of this meeting, he asked if I had anything I wanted to say.

"I challenged his comments that I was just a defensive full-back, saying I thought I had been adding value to the attack, with examples and stats from my season, before saying I would take away all of his points and that I would do everything I could to get into the World Cup squad.

"He did not like that I had contested what he said and went mad. He shouted: 'Well you lost the f****** ball in contact on Saturday, didn't you? That's f****** not good enough. You're not f****** doing everything you can.'"

Ultimately, Brown wouldn't be picked for the Rugby World Cup with Jones saying that his clash with teammate Ben Te'o had nothing to do with his omission. He's not been picked since.

Jones wrote in his autobiography that the Sarries legend ‘could not match the pace and snarl of his long-term rival Mike Brown.’ 

However, according to Brown's column for the Mail Online, Goode clashed with Jones over this opinion in a heated discussion which led to him being frozen out of the squad after 2016.

The fullback then never won a recall despite being awarded the 2019 European Player of the Year award.
