Japan Rugby League One: Spears seize top spot as Wild Knights suffer record defeat

In one of the standout results of the campaign, Kobe produced a devastating second-half display to overwhelm the previously unbeaten Wild Knights. Locked at 19-19 at the break, the contest swung decisively when Gerard Cowley-Tuioti crossed just before halftime, and Dave Rennie’s men powered on with 21 unanswered points after the restart. A late try from Saitama’s Ryuji Noguchi denied the hosts a bonus point, but the 16-point loss marked the Wild Knights’ heaviest defeat since League One’s inception and saw them slip from first to third.

Kubota took full advantage, overcoming Mitsubishi Sagamihara Dynaboars 26-10 despite briefly being reduced to 13 men. Prop Opeti Helu’s decisive try secured a four-try bonus point and extended the Spears’ remarkable home winning streak to 24 matches at Edoriku Field. The result lifted Kubota three points clear of Kobe and four ahead of Saitama.

Defending champions Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo suffered a fourth defeat of their title defence, thrashed 52-21 by a resurgent Toyota Verblitz.

Toyota exploded into a 27-7 halftime lead and never relented, scoring three tries in each half in a ruthless display. All Blacks Aaron Smith and Mark Telea both crossed twice as Verblitz collected a crucial bonus point to move clear of the relegation zone. Brave Lupus, meanwhile, dropped to fifth after a third straight loss.

BlackRams Tokyo continued their strong second-half form with a 41-19 victory over Urayasu D-Rocks. After trailing 14-12 at halftime, the Rams produced a 29-point blitz after the break. Israel Folau scored twice for D-Rocks, but tries from Isaac Lucas, Taira Main (2), and Liam Gill ensured the hosts pulled clear.

Elsewhere, Tokyo Sungoliath recorded an emphatic 54-22 win over Yokohama Canon Eagles, overcoming an early red card to Sam Jeffries. Hooker Kosuke Horikoshi’s go-ahead try sparked a dominant final quarter, with Sean McMahon bagging a brace as Sungoliath ran in six tries in the last 24 minutes.

Mie Honda Heat overturned a 21-5 halftime deficit to defeat Shizuoka BlueRevs 26-21 in the Motorcycle Derby. The BlueRevs had capitalised on a first-half yellow card to Ben Paltridge, but Honda rallied with three second-half tries to snatch victory and move within touching distance of the top six.

In Division Two, RedHurricanes Osaka edged Nippon Steel Kamaishi Seawaves 15-14, while Green Rockets Tokatsu defeated Hino Red Dolphins 39-14.

Division Three saw SkyActivs Hiroshima prevail 47-41 in a thriller against Kurita Water Gush Akishima, while Chugoku Electric Power Red Regulions secured their first win of the season.
