Kobelco Kobe Steelers edged defending champions Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo 34-33 in a dramatic Round 8 Division One clash, avenging last season’s trio of defeats in the process. Kobe raced into a commanding 20-0 lead inside the opening half hour and looked in complete control, but Brave Lupus roared back with four second-half tries to set up a grandstand finish.

Rob Thompson briefly put the hosts ahead for the first time during a period when Kobe were reduced to 13 men following yellow cards to Gerard Cowley-Tuioti and Anton Lienert-Brown. Kanta Matsunaga’s second try of the afternoon immediately restored Kobe’s advantage, but Rei Ishioka struck again for Toshiba to leave Richie Mo’unga with a chance to win it from the tee. Trailing early, the BlackRams led 17-13 at halftime before unleashing a six-try second-half blitz. Brodi McCurran’s late try sealed both the emphatic win and a crucial bonus point in the so-called ‘Photocopy Derby.’

Hanazono Kintetsu Liners maintained their unbeaten record with a 50-38 win over Kyuden Voltex. Springboks fly half Manie Libbok scored his first try in Japan and added 17 points from the tee, though visiting fullback Jude Gibbs impressed with 23 points to keep the contest alive until the closing stages.

Toyota Industries Shuttles Aichi delivered a 10-try demolition of Shimizu Corporation Koto Blue Sharks, winning 66-12.
