‘It’s almost like speed dating’- Joe Schmidt reveals Australian side to play Fiji

Hooker David Porecki has been called back into the international starting lineup, after nearly 700 days on from his last appearance in the gold jersey. The 32-year-old will be joined by loosehead James Slipper and Allan Alaalatoa in the front row.

Porecki also captained the Wallabies to a historic loss at the previous Rugby World Cup against Fiji and he is one of nine players who will feature in Sunday’s encounter that did so in France in 2023.

On Porecki making his return, Schmidt said: “He’s process driven, it will be just another game for him but he knows a real opportunity for him.

“I like that about him. Dave is measured so you know when the pressure comes on he’s unlikely to get panicked, he’s going to remain measured and process focused and that’s some of the experience that he brings.”

Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii will make his first Test appearance Down Under for Australia after recovering from a fractured jaw, he joins Len Ikitau in the centres. Harry Wilson will captain the side whilst Harry Potter has been selected on the wing.

Schmidt of course is building towards the first Test against the British and Irish Lions on July 19 in Brisbane, but on selection he’s based it on Test history and current form whilst also wanting to try different combinations.

“It’s almost like speed dating, trying to get these guys together as good as we can to try to build some combinations,” added Schmidt.

“The whole squad has worked hard on and off the field and reconnected well with a short runway from our assembly through to the Test on Sunday against Fiji.

“I think the players and the wider management are keen to get underway, especially in front of a big crowd here in Newcastle (New South Wales), as we kick off an exciting but incredibly demanding 2025 Test match schedule.”
