“Historical Night” – URC Round 10 Preview: Connacht host Leinster in historical clash

The United Rugby Championship is finally back in action this weekend following a two-week break for the Investec Champions Cup and ECPR Challenge Cup final pool stage games. With just under two weeks left until the Guinness Six Nations begins, players who have been called up to their international squads will be vying for a starting selection. This week's fixtures include multiple matches between playoff hopeful teams.

This week's key matchup will be a historical day for Connacht Rugby. Ahead of their game against defending URC champions Leinster, the new Clan Stand will open for the very first time. This will allow a capacity of 12,500 to watch Stuart Lancaster's side clash with the champions. The Westerners are currently in 12th place on 16 points; however, a win would shoot them into the top eight with a game in hand over Italian side Benneton.
“We recognise the importance of the occasion to the province, to the players – particularly the ones who have been here for years – and to the people who had the idea, with all the work that has gone into it. “I don’t think you can shy away from a game of this size and what it means to the province," Lancaster stated ahead of the game.
Despite the significance of the game, Connacht will come into tonight's URC game as underdogs. Coming off a victory in Europe, Leo Cullen has named a Leinster side stacked with international-caliber players. This includes Ireland captain Caelan Doris, a test hopeful Harry Byrne, as well as other Ireland starters, including James Ryan, Gary Ringrose, and James Lowe. During the buildup to the game, Lancaster pointed out the challenge his side faces tomorrow night.
“But we have got to believe that we can beat them. We have got to pray it’s one of those occasions where the crowd, the environment, and the quality of our play lead to a victory, but we know it’s going to be hard because it’s not like you are dealing with players who are not used to playing in big occasions.
“Virtually every player at Leinster has played international rugby. They have played in World Cup games, in huge games in the Aviva, so they will be ready, I am sure.”
Meanwhile, Connacht had 3 players named in the 2026 Ireland Six Nations squad. With Finlay Bealham not being included in the 23 tonight, Cian Prendergast will be the only Irish talent in the Westerners' 15 with Bundee Aki coming in off the bench. However, with what will undoubtedly be a near sold-out crowd behind them, Lancaster's David may have the strength to take down the Goliath of Leinster.
So, with the United Rugby Championship set to be re-ignited with a historical clash, we’ve surveyed the current lay of the land for everything you need to know ahead of the league’s return. Friday 19th December
Ospreys vs Lions - 19:45 KO, Electric Brewery Field
While this game will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the URC table, that will not be the most-discussed topic tonight; Welsh rugby is currently in the middle of a crisis. This came after it was revealed Ospreys owners - Y11 Sport & Media - were the preferred bidders in a deal to purchase Cardiff from the Welsh Rugby Union.
Following this recent announcement, the Ospreys will most likely be looking to make a statement tonight, according to their selection. Wales captain Dewi Lake and fellow internationals Dan Edwards, Kieran Hardy, James Ratti, and Harri Deaves return to the starting 15, alongside Australian lock Ryan Smith. Lions assistant coach Wessel Roux said he is expecting a huge effort from his opponent tonight.
"There's a lot of uncertainty in Welsh rugby at the moment. I think everybody wants to fight and put their best foot forward. They'll be an absolutely hungry side and will want to make a statement."
With the ongoing turmoil in Welsh Rugby at the moment, a victory tonight would be significant for Mark Jones, placing them firmly in contention to finish in the top eight of the URC.
Edinburgh vs Vodacom Bulls- 19:45 KO, Hive Stadium.
Another URC clash with serious table implications, both Edinburgh and the Vodacom Bulls are currently on the outside looking in, sitting at tenth and eleventh respectively, with a game in hand each. After a massive win over Pau in France in the Investec Champions Cup, the Vodacom Bulls are currently three points and three places off eighth place heading into tonight's game.
However, despite Edinburgh's loss to Bath last week, they will come into tonight's game feeling like the favorites for the URC clash. With the Bulls having never won at the Hive stadium, the Scotland international trio of Duhan van der Merwe, Pierre Schoeman, and D’arcy Rae have all been passed fit to start after recovering from injuries. Edinburgh head coach Sean Everritt commented on this during the week.
“It’s fantastic to welcome back such an experienced cohort of players. Having the likes of Duhan, Pierre and Darcy back from injury gives the squad a massive lift. We are proud of our unbeaten run at Hive Stadium. Our fans have been incredible all year, and it’s vital they get behind us from the first whistle this Friday night to help us get the result this team is working so hard for.”
While the Bulls have been one of the most underperforming teams in the URC, they will still pose a massive threat to Edinburgh tonight in a vital clash. With a fifteen that is stacked with Springbok talent from top to bottom, including the likes of Handre Pollard, Kurt-Lee Arendse, and Willie Le Roux, Edinburgh will have to lean on their home crowd tonight.
Munster Rugby vs Dragons - 19:45 KO, Virgin Media Park
Following their elimination from the Investec Champions Cup, tonight's game will be vital for Munster's season. Currently sitting in sixth, the Irish side has an opportunity to jump as far as second tonight, if the results in the other game go their way. Despite that, however, tonight's game could serve as a trap for Clayton McMillan's side.
With Ireland internationals Jack Crowley, Craig Casey, and Tadhg Beirne all missing out on tonight's game, some Munster youngsters will have a point to prove tonight. This includes former Ireland U20's star Sean Edogbo, who comes in tonight off the back of his older brother's Six Nations inclusion. Edogbo, one of eight changes to the side that were defeated by Castres last week. However, the Munster head coach claimed to have a lot to look forward to seeing in tonight's clash.
"He’s not quite as big a lump as Edwin is. He’s a little shorter and perhaps has a little bit more acceleration in his game."He’s just a different profile of athlete, but we’re really excited about his potential. He possibly could have played a number of games already this year, but he got injured right at the start of the season when we had a few other things going on, and he sort of missed his opportunity when the door was open."
Munster will host the Dragons in Cork this evening. In a game that could have serious implications for their URC playoff hopes, they will face a stern challenge from a strong named Dragons side, including the return of Welsh star Seb Davies, who will come off the bench.
Saturday, December 20th
Scarlets vs Ulster - 15:00 KO, Parc y Scarlets.
Coming off the back of a nervy victory in Europe to finish top of their pool, Ulster will once again return to the URC this week. Earlier in the season, head coach Richie Murphy expressed the significance of the United Rugby Championship season, dubbing it the Irish side's priority. After a dissapointing campaign in 2025, they have become one of the stories of this year, currently sitting in 3rd, with a game in hand on the teams above them.
One of the key components to this huge turnaround this year has been Ulster's attacking coach, Mark Sexton, who has transformed them into one of the most explosive sides in Europe. He spoke to the media ahead of tomorrow's game against the Welsh side.
"I worked with some of the individual backs. I knew we'd be in a good position. I didn't know we'd be third in the URC table and on top of the Challenge Cup, but we're very happy with where we're at. But we know we need to keep getting better as well." Sexton explained during Ulster's most recent media briefing. The attacking coach also claimed that making the switch from Connacht to Ulster was not a gamble at all, despite the Northern side finishing 14th the season before.
Following Sexton's decision, multiple Ulster players have reaped the awards from the attacking coach's style of play. This includes the likes of Nathan Doak and Rob Baloucoune, who were featured in the panel for Ireland's Six Nations squad after a long absence from the team. They both start tonight, as Murphy names a full-strength squad with the goal of going top of the table in mind.
Following their success this season, the Ulster coaching staff have also all signed contract extensions through to the year 2028. Despite a strong team being named by the Scarlets, the Welsh side, who are currently sitting at the bottom of the table, will most likely struggle to deal with a rising Ulster side.
DHL Stormers vs Hollywood Bet Sharks- 17:30 KO, DHL Stadium.
If Ulster want to go top of the URC tomorrow, they will need the Hollywood Bet Sharks to beat the Stormers tomorrow. While the Stormers currently sit on top of the table, with the Sharks all the way down in 14th, that all goes out the window in one of South Africa's most heated rivalries. Stormers' flanker Paul de Villiers explained why tomorrow's game could go any way, despite the discrepancies between both teams.
"They are like those derby games you play at school, no matter what the teams have done before, and who is in form and who isn't, they are close and it feels like anyone can win.” The Sharks and the Stormers will take each other on again next week. However, it is the Stormers that will have the advantage this week, with the home crowd combined with a stacked lineup.
Springboks stars, like Scrumhalf Cobus Reinach, inside centre Damian Willemse, and fullback Warrick Gelant, have returned to the starting line-up for the coastal clash. They will join other internationals, such as Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, in the starting 15. However, the Sharks' head coach, JP Pietersen, has taken a different approach.
“We have come short, but these days it is a match between two teams of 23 rather than 15, and there is not much difference when it comes to whether you are starting or playing off the bench.” Included on the Hollywood Bet Sharks' bench are legendary Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, as well as Ox Nche and Grant Williams.
In a coastal clash that will kick off a series of two, a war of attrition can be expected tomorrow evening as the two sides meet in the next iteration of the Coastal Debry.
Cardiff Rugby vs Beneton Rugby - 19:45 KO, Cardiff Arms Park.
In a time of turmoil for the club, Cardiff are coming off a 31-0 hammering at the hands of the Exeter Chiefs in Europe. Meanwhile, their Italian opponents are riding into tonight's game off the back of a 74-21 demolition of the Dragons last week. Despite that, the Blues are still in a healthy position in the URC, currently sitting in fourth. Meanwhile, Beneton may crash out of the top eight tonight, with four teams behind them creeping up with a game in hand.
Seven Cardiff players were named in Wales' squad for the Six Nations, and six of them will feature in the starting 15 tonight. With both teams playing with the potential of falling out of high positions, the Treviso side will be missing their top try scorer, Louis Lynagh, as well as Matt Gallagher, for tomorrow's clash. However, they have been bolstered by the return of Italian star Tommaso Menocello.
Ahead of tomorrow's clash, Cardiff will also be looking to the future, as five of their remaining nine fixtures are on the road, including a tour in South Africa. Speaking to the media ahead of tomorrow's game, head coach Corniel Van Zyl expressed the importance of winning at home.
"We know we don't have a lot of home games left, so we need to make sure we get the energy levels right, the intent right, and ultimately to make the families and supporters proud,"
As one of two matches that will close out week ten's action, tomorrow's URC clash between Benetton and Cardiff may be one of the most important when it comes to playoff implications for both teams.
Zebre Parma vs Glasgow Warriors - 19:45 KO, Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi
In the final game of a stacked week of United Rugby Championship action, the Glasgow Warriors will be the heavy favorites as they look to climb to the top of the URC, sitting two points behind the Stormers. However, they have played a game more. Head coach Franco Smith made the decision to make five changes from the team that played Saracens last week, as they hope to wrap up the Scottish-Italian Shield for the fourth time.
“We know that we must continue to display the best version of ourselves tomorrow night, as we look to keep our recent momentum going upon our return to the BKT URC. Zebre possess a proud home record and a playing group packed with talent, with several of their players having been named in the Italy squad earlier this week.”
With the Six Nations just on the horizon, Smith will have all of his Scottish stars on show to close out Week 10 of URC action. Included in the starting 15 are the explosive center pairing of Huw Jones and Sione Tuipulito, international winger Kyle Steyn, as well as other Scotland stars such as George Horne, Jamie Bhatti, and Rory Darge.
