Guardian brutally picks five Lions who 'let themself down'

The experienced rugby scribe has rated every Lion who played in the test series with these five receiving the most damning reviews.

Guardian: "The England captain would have hoped to play a much bigger on-field role. Unstinting team man as always but his omission from third Test squad will have stung."

Our verdict: "A series to forget for the uninspiring England captain. Outshone by his junior Marcus Smith, it will be very interesting to see if he remains in Eddie Jones plans moving forward starting with the Autumn Internationals."

Guardian: "Thrilled to make the Test team – at last – on his third Lions tour. Will not recall the second Test with massive pleasure, unfortunately."

Our verdict: His early tour was disrupted by isolation. Did alright in the first test but flopped in the second.

Guardian: "The Six Nations player of the tournament had to sit patiently behind Tom Curry. Fortunate not to be shown a yellow card in the first Test."

Our verdict: Any suggestion the Scot is too small – which really shouldn’t be taken too seriously if you’ve been watching international for the last two years – have been completely dismissed

Guardian: "Finally picked to start in the final Test and had his moments, without being entirely at his best. His decision not to pass to the unmarked Josh Adams was a series-defining moment."

Our verdict: "Came into the team to bring defensive safety in the third test but ended up being rinsed by Cheslin Kolbe. He'll be more fondly remembered for his exploits in New Zealand four years ago."

Guardian: "More highs and lows than a busy fairground attraction. Had been expected to be among the Lions’ chief conductors but too often struggled to raise the tempo."

Our verdict: "Mixed bag throughout the tour but box-kicked well when he was on the field. Like Williams, will be more remembered for previous exploits."
