Gregor Townsend could be set for shock Scotland exit with replacement already lined up

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has revealed he’s been in discussions with senior figures at Murrayfield in recent months — but insists his own future has not been part of those talks.

Townsend’s current contract is set to expire after next year’s Six Nations, with Glasgow Warriors boss Franco Smith heavily linked as the frontrunner to succeed him.
“I’ve had conversations with both David and Alex about the future but not necessarily
my future,” Townsend said.
“Just about where the team is going and reviewing the Six Nations. But we’ve also been looking at areas that we might have to strengthen or bring more players through.
“They’re normal those conversations — but nothing about my own situation.
“My contract is up after the Six Nations. So, I’d imagine those conversations will start as we get closer to November or after the summer tour.”
Smith, who took charge at Scotstoun in 2022, has quickly impressed with his expansive style of play and strong results. The South African guided Glasgow to the 2023 Challenge Cup title and has helped develop a crop of promising Scottish players, earning admiration from the SRU hierarchy.
A former Italy head coach and Director of Rugby at the Italian federation, Smith is known for his tactical acumen and development-focused approach — qualities that make him a strong candidate should Townsend depart after the Six Nations.
