George Ford drops major hint over shock code switch

The experienced playmaker isn’t going anywhere just yet. Ford remains a key figure at Sale Sharks, having recently signed a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2029. He’s also still firmly on the radar of England head coach Steve Borthwick, despite being left out towards the back end of the 2026 Six Nations Championship.

But looking further down the line, Ford has opened the door to a potential cross-code move—and it’s one that clearly excites him.

Speaking to The Sun, the 33-year-old said:

Ford’s control and game management have made him one of the most respected fly-halves in rugby union—but it’s the faster tempo and increased involvement in league that has caught his attention.

And this isn’t just talk. Given his professionalism and ability to look after his body, there’s every chance Ford could still make the switch later in his career—even into his mid-to-late 30s—and remain highly effective.

He added:

For now, Ford’s focus remains on club and country—but this is one storyline that could develop into something huge in the years ahead.
