Former F1 boss and London Irish owner Eddie Jordan dies aged 76

Eddie Jordan, the larger-than-life former Formula 1 team boss and outspoken TV pundit, has died at the age of 76.

The Irishman, who had been battling aggressive prostate cancer, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Thursday morning in Cape Town, surrounded by his family.

From the grid to the studio – an unforgettable career

Jordan, known for his flamboyant personality and razor-sharp wit, carved out a unique legacy in Formula 1. As the founder of Jordan Grand Prix, he brought a vibrant, rock-and-roll energy to the sport. His team debuted in 1991, went on to claim four grand prix victories, and even briefly challenged for the drivers' title in 1999. Despite declining fortunes that led to the sale of the team in 2005, Jordan’s influence remained undeniable.

A pundit with personality

Post-F1, Jordan transitioned seamlessly into punditry, first with BBC Sport and later with Channel 4. His forthright views and knack for breaking major stories made him a fan favourite. Whether analysing race strategies or dropping exclusive scoops, Jordan’s lively approach kept audiences hooked.

A mentor to future champions

Jordan’s eye for talent helped launch the careers of several F1 greats. Both Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill owe their early breaks to him, with many more drivers benefitting from his guidance. His impact extended beyond the paddock, recently taking on the role of patron for London Irish Rugby Football Club, a project he remained passionate about until his final days.

A statement from the family

In an emotional tribute, his family said:

"Eddie and Jordan Grand Prix were known for their rock and roll image, bringing a fun and exciting element to F1, as well as consistently performing above their weight. EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy and Irish charm everywhere he went. We all have a huge hole missing without his presence. He will be missed by so many people, but he leaves us with tonnes of great memories to keep us smiling through our sorrow."
