Much was expected of Jones and he failed to deliver. A soft earful knock-on was indicative of how be played below his usual standard and while he went on to encouragingly break the Irish line with a run with the scoreline at 3-12, he couldn’t make his presence sufficiently felt on the half-dozen times he was in possession.

Being captain didn’t inspire him to rediscover his best form. Davies’ never really looked like a leader and his performance was less than inspiring, making just four metres from his eight carries and missing two tackles. He will have far better games than this during this Six Nations.

Hints of nearing Murray levels of performance - a nicely stolen try - but his world class passing and kicking game, taken as guaranteed before the injury, are still missing. The timing is off. The weight of box kicks not there. 

In an all-round poor effort from the French, Doumayrou was almost anonymous. The centre made just five runs, managed only 34 metres and found it tough going in defence.
