"Finished" - Three players who won’t play for Springboks again

Under Rassie Erasmus, South Africa have turned almost every position into a three-man race — and that competitiveness has left little room for players whose careers have taken dramatic turns.

In recent years, several once-established Bok stars have found themselves on the outside after high-profile suspensions. For some, the road back to Test rugby now looks impossibly long.

Elton Jantjies was once the heartbeat of the Lions’ glittering Super Rugby run, the SA Super Rugby Player of the Decade, and a 46-cap Springbok whose calm temperament and attacking flair made him a national favourite.

But his trajectory changed in 2023 when he received a  after testing positive for the banned substance 

clenbuterol, according to official sanctioning documents.

Now 34, Jantjies will only be eligible to return near the end of 2026 — long after the Springboks have refreshed their flyhalf stocks.

By the time Jantjies’ ban ends, South Africa’s next generation will be in full flight, making a Test comeback highly unlikely.

Aphiwe Dyantyi burst onto the Test scene in 2018 like a comet. Electric pace, deadly footwork, and a fearless edge earned him the World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year award — the first South African ever to claim it.

But just as his star peaked, Dyantyi received a lengthy suspension after testing positive for multiple banned substances in 2019, leading to a multi-year ban that sidelined him through the prime of his career.

He finally returned to club rugby in 2023, but the dynamism that once terrified defences has been hard to rediscover — and the Springbok wings are now dominated by the likes of Cheslin Kolbe, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Canan Moodie, and Makazole Mapimpi.

A Bok recall? Realistically, that ship has sailed.

Sbu Nkosi — whose surname fittingly means “King” — was one of the Springboks’ most dangerous wide men between 2018 and 2019.

Powerful, explosive, and clinical, he scored 11 tries in 16 Tests and looked set for a decade-long Bok career.

But off-field struggles and extended absences from professional rugby disrupted his progress. Then, in 2024, he received a three-year suspension after a doping violation confirmed by rugby authorities, ruling him out until 2027.

By his return year, Nkosi will be 32 — competing against a wing crop that is younger, faster, and deeply entrenched.

His Test comeback? It would take a miracle.
