Fijian rugby player Saimoni Vunilagi dies suddenly in Japan aged 26

The back-row forward, who played professionally in Japan for second-division side Kyushu KV, was rushed to hospital following a team training session in Fukuoka on Monday.

Vunilagi remained in hospital before sadly passing away on Friday morning, with his club confirming the devastating news on Saturday.

Temperatures in Fukuoka reportedly reached 35°C (95°F) on the day Vunilagi was taken ill.

Kyushu KV released an emotional statement following the death of their player.

“The players, staff, and all team associates are devastated by this sudden news,” the club said.

“Although Saimoni had only recently joined Kyushu KV, his generous spirit and powerful style of play had raised high hopes for his contributions in the upcoming season.

“We humbly pray for the repose of his soul and extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.”

Vunilagi, who stood 196cm (6ft 5in) and weighed 117kg (258lb), had moved to Japan to attend university before beginning his professional rugby career in 2023.

The powerful Fijian back-rower had only recently joined Kyushu KV and had been preparing for the upcoming season when he was taken ill.

His club said he was admitted to hospital with “symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke”, although no further details surrounding his death have been released.

Vunilagi's death has left his teammates, coaches and everyone associated with Kyushu KV mourning the loss of a player who had been tipped to make a significant impact at the club.
