And three leading candidates are already emerging.

First up is Simon Easterby, the current Ireland defence coach and a long-time member of Farrell’s backroom team.

A former Ireland fly-half with 128 caps, O’Gara combines elite playing pedigree with proven coaching success abroad. His ambition to one day coach Ireland has been well documented.

However, prising him away from France — and managing his strong personality within the IRFU structure — would be a significant undertaking.

Then there’s Paul O’Connell, Ireland’s forwards coach and one of the most respected figures in Irish rugby history.

The former Ireland captain has transitioned seamlessly into coaching, earning praise for the development of Ireland’s pack. His leadership credentials are unquestioned, and his connection with supporters would make him an immensely popular appointment.

While still relatively early in his coaching journey, O’Connell is viewed as a long-term contender — whether immediately in 2027 or further down the line.
