Farah Palmer Cup: Round 5 - Waikato smash records as semi-finals start to take shape

Auckland announced their attacking intent in emphatic fashion, racking up 81 points against Hawke’s Bay. Angelica Mekemeke Vahai etching her name into Storm history by scoring a record five tries on her return from long-term injury. Waikato were just as ruthless, hammering Bay of Plenty with 14 tries and rewriting their own record books in the process, as hooker Grace Houpapa-Barrett equalled Stacey Waaka’s all-time try mark for the province and veteran Ariana Bayler equalled the appearance record.

In the Championship, Otago remain untouchable after brushing aside Taranaki in Dunedin, with their free-flowing game once again too much for opponents to contain. Northland booked a home semi-final after powering past Wellington in the wet, while North Harbour surged into the playoff mix with an impressive win away to Tasman. Meanwhile, Manawatū enhanced their reputation as one of the competition’s most entertaining sides, pulling off another statement win over Counties Manukau.

With only one round remaining before the semi-finals are confirmed, the competition picture is becoming clear in the Farah Palmer Cup. Round 5 proved how nothing can be taken for granted, as the top women's clubs from New Zealand lit up the stadiums across the North and South Islands once again.

Angelica Mekemeke Vahai stole the show in her comeback match, scoring a record five tries as Auckland demolished Hawke’s Bay. The Storm ran in 13 tries overall, showcasing their trademark pace and dominance across the forward pack. Hawke’s Bay were shell-shocked early, trailing 48–0 at halftime, but did salvage pride with a late Caterina Poletti try. Vahai, now with 23 tries in 18 games, underlined her reputation as one of the FPC’s deadliest finishers.

Kaea Nepia equalled her personal best with 24 points, while hooker Grace Houpapa-Barrett equalised Black Ferns' Stacey Waaka’s record of 31 Waikato tries. Veteran Ariana Bayler marked her 62nd cap to equal Victoria Makea’s all-time record, with a try and two conversions. For Bay of Plenty, Ora Williams’ solo effort was a rare bright spark on a tough afternoon.

Wellington clawed back with scores from Harmony Kautai and Keira Su’a-Smith, but Northland’s defence held firm.
