Since swapping Bloemfontein for the Scottish capital in 2021, the powerful loosehead had steadily made his mark at Edinburgh. Quietly but effectively, Venter built a reputation as a rock-solid scrummager and dynamic ball-carrier in the United Rugby Championship.

With Scotland struggling for depth at loosehead—and Venter edging closer to residency qualification in 2026—many believed it was only a matter of time before Gregor Townsend came calling, following in the footsteps of Duhan van der Merwe and Pierre Schoeman.

But then Rassie Erasmus picked up the phone. And everything changed.

That call from the Springboks' director of rugby turned Venter’s Test trajectory on its head. Last weekend in Mbombela, the 28-year-old pulled on the green and gold for the first time—and made an instant impact. He crossed the whitewash just eight minutes into his debut as South Africa romped to a 55-10 win over Georgia.

That try didn’t just seal a dream debut—it shut the door on any lingering hopes of a Scotland cap.

Venter said: "From a young boy playing rugby at six or seven years old, it’s every South African’s dream to play for the Springboks, so when I got that call, it was pretty much a no-brainer for me."

Venter’s journey may have taken a detour through the URC, but make no mistake—he’s home now.
