Fullback: Elliot Daly - Played more like a winger than fullback and didn't look comfortable taking the ball in the air. However, he slotted a wonderful penalty and cleared his lines with the boot superbly all afternoon. 7/10

Winger: Jack Nowell - It was great to see the Exeter man back in an England shirt, but a shame to see so little of him on the front foot. Didn't do much wrong but was replaced by Chris Ashton after 65 minutes. 6.5/10

Centre: Henry Slade - Saved a certain try in the first half but was unable to make significant impact on the game. 6/10

Centre: Ben Te'o - Felt sorry for him. Looked off the pace, having played just 28 minutes this season, but he will get better! 6/10

Winger: Jonny May - Limited opportunities to show his electric pace but was still always England's greatest threat. One of the worlds best wingers. 7.5/10

Fly-half: Owen Farrell (co-captain) - Led England out and was one of the teams better performers, kicking perfectly from the tee to give Eddie Jones side a much needed narrow victory. Nearly cost his team with a late shoulder tackle. 8/10

Scrum-half: Ben Youngs - Kicked too much and his distribution was poor in the opening 40. Increased the intensity and looked like a different player in the second half before being replaced by Danny Care after 65 minutes. 6.5/10

Prop: Alec Hepburn - Struggled to front up to the Boks and was replaced by Chiefs teammate Ben Moon at the break. 5/10

Hooker: Dylan Hartley (co-captain) - Quiet in the loose but accurate on the line-out. It was one of his best games in an England shirt but he was replaced by Jamie George after 56 minutes. 7/10

Prop: Kyle Sinckler - His offside allowed Pollard to open the scoring. Struggled against the Springbok scrum and didn't manage to make any of his trademark rampaging runs. 6/10

Lock: Maro Itoje - Got himself a stupid yellow card for not rolling away in the first half but made an eye-catching break in the second half. A performance full of highs and lows. 6.5/10

Lock: George Kruis - His execution wasn't always perfect but his endeavour couldn't be faulted. 6.5/10

Flanker: Brad Shields - Nothing special. Looked naive at times and killed an impressive England attack with an audacious offload attempt 5.5/10

Flanker: Tom Curry - Missed a number of tackles in the opening 40 before hobbling off shortly after the break. 5.5/10

Number 8: Mark Wilson - Played out of his usual position, the Newcastle Falcons back-rower give it absolutely everything, carrying relentlessly and tackling everything that moves. Did himself proud on his first start at Twickenham. Our man of the match. 8.5/10
