15 Elliot Daly: Still questionable in the air and doesn't look fully comfortable at fullback. A 50m penalty was the only major highlight of an below-par display. a lot of fans on social media calling for Mike Brown to be recalled... 5/10

14 Joe Cokanasiga: Caught they eye on his England debut, scoring a crucial try in the second half. A very exciting talent and also the fans man of the match! 8/10

13 Jack Nowell: Didn't really impress after his unexpected change of position. Definitely not the 13 England have been looking for. 5/10

12 Alex Lozowski: The centre needed a big performance and he simply didn't deliver. His missed tackle led to Japan's first try, he had very little ball and he was replaced at halftime. 3/10

11 Chris Ashton: Started okay but went off injured after 33 minutes. 5/10

10 George Ford (captain): Celebrated his 50th cap with a win as captain. However, he didn't really ever get control of the game as he would have liked. Decent off the tee though. 6/10

9 Danny Care: He opened the try-scoring but that is as good as it got for the Quins scrum-half. Will be disappointed to have missed his tackle on Leitch, leading to Japan's second try.

2 Jamie George: He needed a big performance and to an extent delivered. Much better at the lineout this week but was yellow-carded for a brainless moment at the breakdown. 5.5/10

3 Harry Williams: Scrummaged and tackled well. 6/10

4 Charlie Ewels: Definitely grew into the game in the second half, offering much more of a carrying presence. Abrasive and mobile. 6/10

5 Maro Itoje: The England vice-captain bullied Japan early on but things got a lot tougher. Regained his composure after the break. 6.5/10

6 Courtney Lawes: Not as effective in the back-row but his usual tough-tackling self nevertheless. Won a crucial breakdown penalty 10 minutes from the end, with Japan pressuring the English try line. 7/10

7 Mark Wilson: Another bruising performance from the Cumbrian heavyweight. His tough tackling kept Japan somewhat at bay in the first half and he scored the crucial try to recapture England the lead in the second-half. 8/10

8 Zach Mercer: Huge work rate and appetite for fight when his side were on the ropes. 7/10
