Danny Care, Harlequins’ all-time appearance leader and cult hero, has confirmed that he will retire from professional rugby at the end of the 2024/25 season.
The legendary scrum-half, who joined Quins from Leeds Tykes back in 2006, has spent nearly two decades lighting up The Stoop with his trademark flair, infectious energy, and elite-level game management.
Mr. Harlequin: 394 appearances and counting
Since arriving in southwest London, Care has pulled on the Quins jersey an astonishing 394 times—more than any other player in the professional era. From outrageous solo tries to ice-cold game-winning kicks, he’s been at the heart of everything.
A two-time Premiership champion (2012, 2021) and a European Challenge Cup winner (2011), Care has delivered in the biggest moments—often with a grin on his face and a glint in his eye.
England centurion and Grand Slam winner
Internationally, Care’s impact was just as significant. Earning his first England cap in 2008, the electric No.9 went on to become a core figure in the national setup, playing in three Six Nations title-winning campaigns, including the Grand Slam of 2016.
He also featured in two Rugby World Cups (2015 and 2023), playing a key role in England’s run to the semi-finals in France last autumn.
The next chapter: Club ambassador
Although he’s hanging up his boots, Care’s connection with Harlequins won’t end just yet. The 37-year-old will stay on in an ambassadorial role, continuing to inspire the next generation at the Club he calls home.
Danny Care’s farewell message ?
“So, it's finally time. After 19 years of playing for this incredible Club, I'm going to be retiring from rugby at the end of the season.
“To the fans—thank you for everything you've given me and my family. You’ve sung my name louder than it’s ever deserved. I can't put into words what playing for you has meant to me.
“To Charles and Duncan, the owners—thank you for the opportunities and the belief. And to every coach, teammate and member of staff: I’ll forever be grateful.
“I will be supporting this Club forever, and I’ll always be a Quin.”
