Gloucester confirm signing of forgotten England international

For Robson, this move feels less like a transfer and more like a homecoming. The scrum-half came through the Gloucester Academy and went on to make 80 appearances between 2010 and 2015, growing from a promising youngster into one of the Premiership’s most dangerous attacking threats before moving on to Wasps.

His development during that first spell at Kingsholm opened doors on the international stage too. In January 2014, Robson earned his first representative honours with England Saxons, featuring in a 16–16 draw against Scotland A. Later that summer, he was selected to face the Barbarians and made his England debut in a non-cap fixture at Twickenham — a landmark moment that hinted at what was to come.

Robson’s career continued to gather momentum away from Gloucester. During seven seasons with Wasps, he made 150 appearances and played in Premiership Finals in both 2017 and 2019, establishing himself as one of the league’s most exciting scrum-halves.

His club form was again recognised internationally, scoring for the England Saxons against South Africa A in Bloemfontein in 2016 before earning a call-up to Eddie Jones’ senior England training squad later that year.

That progression eventually led to the highest level. In February 2019, Robson made his full England Test debut off the bench against France in the Six Nations, before scoring his first international try later in the tournament against Italy.

He added to that tally in November 2020, crossing against Georgia in the Autumn Nations Cup, and was part of the matchday squad as England defeated France in extra-time to lift the trophy — another chapter in a career shaped by persistence and consistency.

When Wasps entered administration in 2022, Robson embraced a new challenge abroad, joining Pau in the Top 14. Now a senior figure in France, he has made 71 appearances for the club and remains an influential presence, most recently scoring against Northampton Saints in the Champions Cup — proof that his appetite and edge remain undimmed.

Gloucester’s Director of Rugby, George Skivington, believes Robson’s return is about more than nostalgia.

“Dan brings a wealth of experience back to Kingsholm, but he’s also still a fantastic player, and that’s a testament to his professionalism and dedication,” Skivington said. “Everybody knows the attacking qualities that he possesses and how that fits into our system, but he’s also got the experience to manage the game when required.

“We’re really invested in young players like Caolan [Englefield] and Mikey [Austin], and Dan coming in will benefit us in the short term while also being a great person for those guys to learn from.”

For Robson, Gloucester has never stopped feeling like home.

“I owe a lot to Gloucester — it’s where it all began for me,” he said. “It’s always been a very special place. Some of my fondest memories in rugby are from playing for and against Gloucester, and the chance to come full circle and return to a club I’ve held so dearly was an opportunity I jumped at.

“There’s a real sense of potential in this squad, and I feel I can help bring some experience to the group. I’m really grateful to George and the coaches for the opportunity, and I can’t wait to get back out there in front of The Shed again next season.”
