The club have had to let a number of senior stars depart the club due to lack of budget, including Jackson Wray and Duncan Taylor.

Number 8 Billy Vunipola may also have to leave the club with no new contract announced for the England stars.

Sarries boss Mark McCall said: “This is not the team that won the double in 2019, far from it. Everyone knows we are a squad in transition.

"We sat down in August as a group and talked about playing differently, more bravely, and that included fitness and mental toughness and not going into our shell.

“Younger players would benefit from the wisdom of Jackson and Duncan for another year. But it’s gone and that’s a real shame, because they would have continued playing.”

Speaking to the I, Wray added: “The elephant in the room is the salary cap being the lowest in my time – that is a challenge against the big boys of all the French clubs, and Leinster.

"Some of them have almost three times as big a budget."

Watson was born in Surrey and was a member of the London Irish academy before making his professional debut for The Exiles in 2011 and representing England at Under-20 level during the next two seasons.

Rhys Patchell, the fly-half from Wales, will showcase his abilities to potential suitors this weekend after being released by the Scarlets.

He is set to participate in a match between a World XV squad and the Barbarians at Twickenham on Sunday at 14:00 BST.

Before his first call-up to the Scotland squad for the 2017 RBS 6 Nations, Berghan had already made 24 appearances for Edinburgh. He played in three Tests as a substitute. Later in the same year, he featured in Scotland's Autumn Tests at BT Murrayfield, where he earned his first start in the memorable victory over Australia in November.

Consistent performances led to Berghan's inclusion in the 2019 Rugby World Cup squad, where he added a couple more caps to his name.

Since then, he has been a regular part of Scotland's wider squads, culminating in a substitute appearance during their historic victory over France in the 2021 Guinness Six Nations in Paris.
