Despite snapping a two-year, 10-match home losing streak and handing new head coach Steve Tandy his first triumph, several Welsh players endured afternoons they’ll want to forget.

As the lead swung back and forth six times in a chaotic second half, individual errors and underwhelming performances kept Japan firmly in the contest. Here are four Wales players who flopped on a day that was far from convincing.

RUCK 2/10: "In an intriguing back three, Cardiff Rugby’s Adams struggled, unlike Rees-Zammit. His only notable contribution was strong defensive work.

However, he received a lower rating due to a careless and dangerous clearout in the closing moments of the first half, which resulted in a 20-minute red card, shortly after he had kicked the ball out of play."

Wales Online 2/10: "The Cardiff man was solid enough prior to his red card but lacks the x-factor in attack of his younger days. Adams' recklessness in giving away a needless penalty at the stroke of half-time which resulted in a 20-minute red card let his side down."

Planet Rugby 4/10: "Great in the air and looked threatening in attack. After receiving a yellow card at the end of the first half, he returned to find it upgraded to a 20-minute red, meaning an early bath for the star. "

Rugby Pass 3,5/10: "Got hung out for Japan’s first but the upgrade to a 20-minute red card was disastrous. A really poor moment from one of Wales’ senior players, who should know better."

Planet Rugby 5/10: " It was a mixed performance from the exciting full-back. He was stepped too easily during an early Japan break, and later dropped the ball on the right flank when his side were on the attack. He did look threatening at times, using his fast feet to put Japan off balance, but was sadly not always on the same page as his teammates."

Rugby Pass 5/10: "A fraught first half littered with handling mistakes and loose moments. Never quite recovered his composure"

Wales Online 4/10: "Dangerous with ball in hand but struggled under the high ball again and fell off a few tackles."

RUCK 4/10: "Aerially, it was an afternoon to forget, reminiscent of his last outing against Argentina. This time, however, he was far better. Despite this, he still isn’t reaching the heights he showed in the Six Nations, as some errors hindered his rating.

There was a nervy moment when the fullback fumbled possession, almost allowing the visitors to score. He needs to regain the form he displayed a few months ago, especially with New Zealand coming to the Welsh capital next week."

Rugby Pass 5.5/10: "Must take his share of the blame for the brainrot in the lineout. Otherwise steady."

Wales Online 4/10: "The Montpellier second-row is the type of player who gets through a mountain of unseen work. But Wales struggled to impose themselves physically for large periods of the game and has to take some of the blame for the lineout malfunctioning. This second-row partnership does not carry enough ball."

Planet Rugby 5/10: "The quieter of the two props during this game, but he did beat two players in the process – a fact that the front-rower will be keen to share."

Wales Online 5/10: "Put Japan under pressure in the scrum which was the strongest aspect of Wales' game. The Leicester Tigers loosehead put in eight tackles and four carries."

RUCK 5/10: "With strong competition at loosehead, it was no surprise that the Leicester Tigers player started. He made occasional carries that gained ground and held his own in the scrum. He was replaced early in the second half by Rhys Carre."
