"Devastated" - Springbok World Cup-winner suffers potentially career-ending injury

Fourie became one of the unlikely heroes of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, stepping up in extraordinary fashion when Malcolm Marx’s tournament-ending injury forced him into the role of backup hooker to Bongi Mbonambi.

Then, in one of the most remarkable moments of the tournament, Fourie was called into action early in the final after Mbonambi went down — playing nearly the full 80 minutes and even captaining the Springboks in the closing stages as South Africa lifted the Webb Ellis Cup once again.

The 39-year-old hasn’t featured for the Boks since that historic night, having suffered a broken tibia in a URC clash against Connacht earlier this year — an injury that many feared might spell the end of his illustrious career.

But in true Fourie fashion, the Stormers warrior refused to give in. After months of gruelling rehab, he finally made his long-awaited return to action last Friday. Sadly, his comeback ended in heartbreak.

Fourie was forced off clutching his arm, and Stormers head coach John Dobson confirmed the devastating news after the match — a serious bicep injury that will require surgery.

“Deon’s devastated,” Dobson admitted after his side’s emphatic 34-0 win over the Scarlets. “There were a lot of tears in the changeroom — Deon was in tears. It’s a serious bicep injury, so he’ll go home for surgery.”

Despite the dominant performance, the result was overshadowed by the emotional blow. “It’s an emotional changeroom,” Dobson added. “As much as the win is pleasing, it shows how close this team is — they’re all gutted for Deon.”

A true warrior and fan favourite, Fourie’s fighting spirit has never been in doubt. And while this latest setback is a cruel one, few would dare bet against him bouncing back once again.
