"Derbies Galore" - URC Round 7 Preview: Stormers host Lions in bid to stay Unbeaten

With the dust settled upon the first European window of the 2025/26 season, all eyes turn back to the URC with the DHL Stormers out in poll position. The Cape Town side have set the standard throughout the first six weeks of the season, with a stellar unbeaten run laying down a real statement of intent from the South African side, who are spearheaded by Springboks out-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

The current chasing pack in the season-long 'race to the eight' begins with Cardiff Rugby in second, before Munster enter the fray in third. Ulster and Glasgow Warriors then hold the fourth and fifth ranks respectively, with defending champions Leinster climbing the rungs at sixth after an underwhelming start to the season. Emirates Lions and Vodacom Bulls come in at seventh and eighth, to complete a solid South African contingency that all have their sights set on the end of season knock-out stages.

Here's RUCK's preview for the seventh round of the URC season, beginning with a hotly anticipated Irish inter-provincial clash set for Friday night.

We kick off our preview with a blockbuster match up between two Irish provinces that have plenty to prove. Leinster started off their URC season poorly, with four straight losses witnessed across a poor tour of South Africa and a Croke Park derby defeat to Munster. However, Leo Cullen's men have since begun to turn their fortunes around, with a solid Champions Cup block brought about victories over Harlequins and Leicester Tigers, with marquee signing Rieko Ioane unleashed against the English clubs.

Ulster have been the story of the URC season so far as they fly high in unfamiliar surroundings. The arrival of new attack coach Mark Sexton has certainly proved worthwhile, as the he province has enjoyed a run of five wins in seven matches, with bonus point wins secured in the quintet of triumphs across their league and European campaigns.

A gut-wrenching defeat to Cardiff ended their Challenge Cup efforts upon a sour note, giving Richie Murphy's side all the more reason to upset the hosts in Dublin. With the likes of Jacob Stockdale and Nick Timoney representing Ulster for Ireland in the Autumn, the once overlooked stars of the northernmost province will want to keep proving themselves to Andy Farrell for a Six Nations run.

The URC action kicks-off across two capital cities, with Cardiff hosting the Scarlets alongside the above derby in Dublin. Cardiff enter this battle between the Welsh rivals upon a tidal wave of momentum, after snatching a late 29-26 Challenge Cup victory over Ulster this past weekend thanks to the clutch kicking of Wales fly half Callum Sheedy.

Cardiff are enjoying a hot start to their 2025/26 URC season, with five wins in six matches firmly putting the capital city club in the upper echelons of the table. Second in the league, the blue and blacks now host bottom of the table Scarlets, with the Llanelli side rather down on their luck so far this season. The Scarlets were swept aside by three South African opponents upon their trip to the land of the Springboks, yet Dwayne Peel's men were able to secure a shock victory against Glasgow Warriors to get on the board.

After finishing in the top eight last season, the Scarlets then had the task of competing in the Champions Cup as the only representation from the four Welsh regions. What followed this past fortnight was a one-point defeat to Bristol Bears (16-17), before the Scarlets were humbled on the road to Bordeaux-Begles, as the French side ran rampant for a 50-21 home win. The Scarlets are in need of a win, with Cardiff out to prove that their hot streak has not burned out as the URC resumes.

The seventh round of URC action continues in Cape Town, where table-topping DHL Stormers will look to extend their flawless start against a Lions side scrapping to remain in the play-off picture. The Stormers sit proudly atop the standings with six wins from six, their most recent league outing delivering a statement 27–21 victory away to Munster in a clash that pitched the competition’s two form teams against one another at Thomond Park.

John Dobson’s side have carried that momentum seamlessly into Europe. Back-to-back Champions Cup wins away to Bayonne and at home against La Rochelle mean the Stormers are now unbeaten in eight matches across all competitions, with confidence flowing through the squad. At the heart of it all is Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, whose composure and creativity at fly-half has elevated an already potent backline.

The Emirates Lions arrive in seventh place, clinging to a top-eight spot after a mixed URC return of three wins from six. Victories over Connacht, Ospreys and Scarlets have shown their potential, but a gutting 14–10 last-gasp Challenge Cup defeat to Newcastle Falcons last weekend may still linger. They will need a big response to halt the league leaders in Cape Town.

Italian pride is firmly on the line as Benetton and Zebre go head-to-head in a finely balanced URC derby with added Six Nations significance. Separated by just one place in the table, Benetton sit 12th with Zebre marginally ahead in 11th, both having recorded two wins from their opening six league fixtures. With Italy head coach Gonzalo Quesada casting a close eye ahead of his first Six Nations squad selection, there will be no shortage of individual motivation on display in Treviso.

Benetton arrive with mixed recent form, having fallen to the Lions away in Johannesburg in the Challenge Cup before responding with a confidence-boosting home victory over Perpignan. Zebre, meanwhile, have also split their European results, beating Montauban at home before coming unstuck against Montpellier, a reminder of the fine margins they continue to navigate.

With Italian internationals spread across both squads, this contest promises intensity, physicality and tactical familiarity. Neither side can afford to give ground in what could prove a pivotal fixture for league momentum — and personal ambitions — as the URC season gathers pace.

The Glasgow Warriors host Edinburgh in a fixture moved to the iconic Hampden Park, with the home of Scottish fooball adding a special backdrop to this inter-city Scottish showdown. Glasgow arrive in strong form, sitting fourth in the URC with four wins from six matches, buoyed by Champions Cup heroics.

Last weekend’s remarkable comeback against Toulouse — overturning a 21-0 first-half deficit to win 28-21 against European heavyweights — showcased the squad’s resilience, with confidence already building from their 26-21 away win over Sale Sharks in Salford.

Edinburgh, by contrast, have had a more uneven start, occupying 10th in the table with two wins from five outings, including a campaign affected by an early cancelled fixture due to storms. Their European record mirrors this inconsistency: a stirring opening win against Toulon was followed by a heavy 33-0 defeat to Castres, underlining the challenge they face. With local pride at stake and both sides eager to assert momentum, expect a physical, high-intensity contest where small margins could define the outcome

The Sharks and Bulls renew their fierce South African rivalry at Kings Park, with both sides under pressure to turn around mixed campaigns. The Sharks sit 14th in the URC with just one win from six matches, their sole victory coming against Scarlets in October. A heavy opening-round Champions Cup loss to Toulouse, featuring a hat-trick from Italy’s Ange Capuozzo, added to a challenging run of form.

However, a morale-boosting 28-23 win over Saracens in Europe demonstrated the team’s potential when firing. Off-field, the Sharks are dealing with the long-term absence of Eben Etzebeth, serving a 12-match ban, weakening their formidable pack. Also, the rumour mill continues to speculate an upcoming exit for Siya Kolisi, with the Springboks captain linked with a move to Japan to further complications.

The Bulls, multiple URC finalists, occupy eighth in the table with three wins from six but have been in a rut, losing their last four fixtures across the URC and Champions Cup. A string of four successive losses came against Glasgow Warriors, Emirates Lions, Bordeaux-Begles and Northampton Saints, with the need for a momentum shift evident for the Pretoria side. Their last victory came in a narrow 28-27 away win at Connacht in mid-October, so expect a bruising derby clash as both sides look to assert dominance in Durban.

There is plenty cause for concern happening at the Ospreys at the moment, as the Swansea side sit in a precarious position if the latest reports are to be believed. The WRU is said to soon be implementing a restructure of the Welsh regions, with one of either the Ospreys or Scarlets lined up for the chopping block per the most recent updates. The double departure of Wales captains Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake from the Ospreys to Gloucester implies that it could well be the Swansea side that faces the axe.

However, as the speculation continues regarding the new West Wales, Cardiff and East Wales regions that are set to come into play before too long, the Ospreys have to focus on the task at hand. An poor start to the URC season puts the Welsh side at 13th in the table, with just one win secured from their past six league matches. The latest European break brought a renewed sense of hope, as the Ospreys picked up wins over Connacht and Montauban to ignite their EPCR Challenge Cup efforts.

Munster on the other hand, enter the fray with fire in their eyes. After a blistering start to the season, the Irish province had their five-match URC winning run snapped by the Stormers ahead of the European break. A desperate Champions Cup opening trip to Bath then followed a second consecutive defeat, with Clayton McMillan's men since returning to winning form with a statement-making win over Gloucester in Cork. Munster look to be back to the races, with an away win all sights set upon a confidence boosting win at Brewery Field this Saturday evening.

The final match of Round Seven in the URC, sees a struggling Dragons side eager to make amends in the league after a bright spark in the Challenge Cup. The Newport outfit sit at 15th in the table without a win to their name, having bagged points through draws against the Ospreys and Sharks in previous weeks. The European break began with an underwhelming trip to France, as an equally struggling Perpignan side broke their personal wait for a win through a 41-17 dismantling of the Dragons.

However, the Men of Gwent were not deterred upon their homecoming, as they hosted last season's EPCR Challenge Cup finalists Lyon OU last weekend. It was a starring effort from Filo Tiatia's men, who battled back from a 21-6 deficit to claim a famous 23-21 triumph under the Rodney Parade lights. The last-ditch trilogy of tries saw Harri Keddie cross over twice, either side of hooker Oli Burrows' score, to snatch a dramatic win away from the clutches of the visiting French side.

Connacht enter this match planted in mid-table, as the Irish province sit at ninth in the league with two wins from five fixtures. Fortunes currently favour the Galway side thanks to their game in hand, as they sit just one-point behind the Bulls who round off the current play-off births. Connacht's latest ventures into Europe began with an underwhelming trip to South Wales, as the Green and Blacks came undone by the Ospreys by narrow margins (24-21). However, the province turned their Challenge Cup form around with a blistering demolition job over Black Lion, with Connacht steamrolling over the Georgian side for a 52-0 triumph at the newly redeveloped Dexcom Stadium.
