Currie Cup Recap: First Division finalists confirmed and Premier Division Back with a Bang

The Eagles will host the decider in George next weekend after cruising past the Leopards 59-10 at Outeniqua Park, while the Valke secured a second successive final appearance with a convincing 44-12 win over Eastern Province in Gqeberha.

The Dotsure SWD Eagles produced one of the most dominant performances of the weekend, racing into a 45-0 half-time lead before eventually defeating the Leopards 59-10. The hosts were rampant in the opening 40 minutes, scoring seven tries as they tore through the Leopards defence. Janus Venter crossed twice, while the Eagles' attacking onslaught also saw Andre Warner, Ewan Coetzee, Gunther Janse van Vuuren, Ulrich Stander, Carel du Preez, Rosco Syster and Tiaan Drotskie get over the line.

The Leopards finally found some joy after the break, with Noegh Hayward and Luyolo Doyi scoring consolation tries as the Eagles eased off the gas. Divan du Toit added five conversions for the hosts, with Fred Zeilinga contributing two more as SWD booked their place in the final and earned home advantage for the decider.

The Valke also secured their place in the final with a strong second-half showing, defeating Eastern Province 44-12 in Gqeberha after leading 19-12 at half-time. The East Rand outfit, beaten in last year's final, scored seven tries to two and will now have another opportunity to go one step further in the competition.

Ilunga Mukendi crossed twice for the visitors, while Kelvin Kaneunungo, Sergio Stalmeester, Zeilinga Strydom, Eddie Evans and Adriaan Joubert also found the try line. Stalmeester was influential throughout, adding a try, three conversions and a penalty goal for a personal haul of 14 points.

The 2026 Carling Currie Cup Premier Division opened with four matches decided by a combined margin of just 18 points, setting the tone for a highly competitive campaign.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks XV were forced to survive a fierce second-half comeback from the Airlink Pumas before claiming a 26-24 victory at Mbombela Stadium. The Sharks looked in control early on, with debutant Lyle Matthews making an instant impression by scoring a first-half hat-trick. His three tries helped the visitors establish a commanding 19-5 half-time lead.

The Pumas, however, refused to surrender. Lundi Msenge, Chyle van Zyl, Tino Swanepoel and JJ Scheepers all crossed after the break as the home side launched a determined fightback. The Sharks were ultimately able to hold on, with Kerron van Vuuren adding another try and Tim Swiel converting three times.

The result gave the Sharks five log points, while the Pumas claimed two bonus points for scoring four tries and finishing within seven points of their opponents.

At DHL Stadium, the DHL Stormers XXIII began their campaign with a 25-19 victory over defending champions Suzuki Griquas. The Stormers were forced to come from behind after trailing 12-8 at half-time. Jean-Luc du Plessis had opened the scoring with an early penalty, but Griquas responded with tries from Sako Makata and Lourens Oosthuizen.

Vernon Paulo's try kept the hosts within touching distance at the break, before the Stormers seized control early in the second half. Mfundo Ndhlovu crossed, while Dominic Malgas added a conversion and penalty to put the hosts 18-12 ahead. Griquas hit back through Tiaan Lange to regain the lead, but the Stormers had the final say when Stefan Ungerer crossed late on against his former side. Malgas added the conversion to seal a memorable victory for the Cape side, while Griquas at least claimed a losing bonus point.

The Toyota Cheetahs then edged the Fidelity ADT Lions 29-27 in a thrilling contest in Bloemfontein. The sides were locked at 8-8 after the opening 15 minutes before the Cheetahs established a narrow 16-13 lead at the break.

The match remained a back-and-forth affair throughout the second half, with both teams trading scores. Likhona Finca completed a hat-trick for the Lions, while Latica Nela also crossed for the visitors. The Cheetahs, however, had enough in reserve to secure the victory, with Jaco van der Walt's late penalty proving decisive.

Marko Janse van Rensburg, Ramon Uys, Victor Sekekete and Cohen Jasper scored the Cheetahs' tries, while Van der Walt added three penalty goals.

The opening round concluded in cold and wet conditions at a packed Boland Stadium, where the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers defeated the Vodacom Bulls XV 24-10. Boland controlled the contest from the outset and led 14-3 at half-time after tries from Joshua Eras and Dayan van der Westhuizen.

The visitors were reduced to 14 men during the first half, and the Kavaliers continued to apply pressure after the break. Jaydon Bantom added a penalty to extend the lead before Shaun Schürmann's converted try brought the Bulls XV back to within seven points. The home side eventually put the result beyond doubt when a powerful driving maul resulted in a penalty try in the 74th minute. Bantom added another penalty, while the Bulls XV were unable to find a late response as Boland secured a convincing opening-round victory.
