AAMI Park in Melbourne hosted a relaxed but competitive charity fixture as the Classic Wallabies held off the British & Irish Legends, winning 41–32.

The Wallabies looked that little bit fresher and were always in control, punishing loose play and moving the ball with more fluidity. There were a few experimental touches, including an ambitious attempt at a Springbok-style midfield lineout, but most of the action came from open play. Hugh Pyle finished the try of the match with some lovely link-up play from the Wallabies backs.

The Lions did manage two late tries to add respectability to the scoreline, but they were chasing the game from early on. This was the first of two games between the sides, with the next one taking place in Sydney next Thursday.

Player Ratings – British & Irish Legends

Craig Gilroy (15) – 8

Started brightly and looked sharp from the off. Picked off a loose pass to score a well-taken try and later finished nicely in the corner. Still has that eye for a gap and was one of the Lions' liveliest attacking players.

Alex Cuthbert (14) – 7.5

Got involved early and was always looking for work. Showed flashes of his old pace and had a few good runs down the wing. Didn’t quite get the space to stretch out fully but brought good intent.

Mike Tindall (13) – 8

Bit of a mixed bag. A few loose passes and a booming old-school clearance with his boot, but also put himself about physically and looked up for the contest. Enjoyed the contact, as always.

Ollie Smith (12) – 7.5

Quick hands and a smart rugby brain, but didn’t get a lot of ball in good positions. Did his best to link things up in midfield but was quiet by his standards.

Shane Williams (11) – N/A

A late drop-out who didn't play.

Tom May (10) – 7.5

Showed flashes of his old class. His passing was crisp and he kept the ball moving well. Missed one conversion off the post but nailed a tough one from the touchline. Controlled things nicely, though he did cough up possession once.

Ben Gollings (9) – 7

Took a moment to settle after a knock-on at the base but soon found his rhythm. Used his Sevens instincts to spread the ball wide and looked to keep the tempo high. Neat and tidy overall.

Jamie Hagan (1)

Made a few carries but didn’t get too involved, which wasn’t surprising with scrums uncontested. Not much opportunity to make a proper front-row impact.

Shane Byrne (2) – 8

Not overly involved in the match, but his mid-game interview on the sidelines added a lot of character. Always brings personality, even if the set-piece wasn’t really a factor.

Mike Ross (3) – N/A

Came off early and may have picked up a knock.

Dave Ewers (4) – 6

Didn’t have much of a presence in open play and wasn’t mentioned often. Might have done the dirty work behind the scenes but stayed under the radar.

Guy Thompson (5) – 6.5

Started with high energy, winning a turnover before quickly losing possession again. Took a big hit but bounced up well. Involved in the thick of things and tried to make an impact.

Jackson Wray (6) – 7

Looked strong with ball in hand early on, carrying well and running nice support lines. Played with good energy and was one of the more active forwards.

Ryan Wilson (7) – 7.5

Had a nice moment with a run and an offload, showing he still has a bit of flair. Brought his usual bite and was always looking for ways to spark something.

Andy Powell (8) – N/A

Went in hard from the start but unfortunately injured his shoulder early and had to step back. A short but full-throttle outing from the ever-committed No. 8.

Paul Doran-Jones (16) – 6

Had very little impact on things.

Petrus du Plessis (17) – 6.5

Looked solid when he came on. Had a go with a pick-and-go and looked in good shape. Probably would’ve liked more time in a proper scrum.

Jon Phillips (18) – 6

Not much involvement.

Tom Court (19) – 6

Took a lineout awkwardly but showed decent speed in defence. A steady effort without really stamping his mark on the game.

Richard Barrington (20) – 7

His loose pass ended up sending Drew Mitchell free, only for Mitchell to pull up injured. Did his best in defence but was outnumbered at times. One of those cameos where the chaos was part of the fun.

Ben Woods (21) – 6.5

Had a go at jackalling but probably regretted it in a legends match. Tried to get stuck in but didn’t really influence proceedings much.

Tommy Seymour (22) – 7

Looked sharp with ball in hand. Still has a bit of pace and made a couple of good runs. One of the more effective backline subs.

Guy Butterworth (23) – 7.5

Scored a smart try after pouncing on a loose ball. Had a bit of everything: outmuscled for a Wallabies score and a cheeky box kick. Enjoyed the moment after coming in due to his connections with the organiser.

Matt Jess (24) – 6.5

Caught out for the first Wallabies try and missed a key tackle later on. A tough afternoon defensively but worked hard to stay involved.

Rhys Gill (25) – 6

Didn’t feature prominently.

Alistair Ross (26) – 6

Not mentioned during the game. Likely played a supporting role with minimal impact.

Sean Lamont (27) – 7

Still has plenty of power. Grabbed an intercept and surged over with real purpose. Brought energy and was clearly enjoying himself out there.

Jonny Barrett (28) – 6.5

Had a shaky moment with a loose pass and just about gathered a deep kick. Nothing too flashy, but stayed in the game.

Ollie Phillips (29) – 7

Brought his usual flair and a bit of humour, cheekily kicking the ball forward after a penalty. Didn’t see much ball but played with personality when he did.

Mimi confirmed the engagement with a sparkling Instagram reveal, flashing the rock and writing: "Mrs I to be." Cue the collective swoon.

Fast forward to May 25, and the couple sealed the deal with a stylish ceremony in London’s swanky Mayfair. The snaps say it all – pure class, serious suits, and big smiles all round.

Sharing the news online, Maro wrote:
