Brian Smith: Former England coach dies aged 59

Smith, who enjoyed a distinguished career as both a player and coach, had been battling an aggressive form of cancer in recent months.

The former half-back represented Australia five times in 1987 before switching allegiance to Ireland two years later. His playing career also included a spell in rugby league, before he turned his attention to coaching and established himself as a highly respected figure in the professional game.

Smith was appointed as an assistant coach with England in 2008, becoming a key member of the coaching staff and taking responsibility for the team's attack. He remained in the role through to the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, where England reached the quarter-finals before losing to France.

Smith subsequently returned to London Irish, having previously enjoyed a successful spell with the club. Across his two periods with London Irish, he helped oversee a period of sustained success, including a third-place Premiership finish and an appearance in the Challenge Cup final.

He also served as the club's director of rugby. Smith most recently worked in Australia as head of sport at Scots College in Sydney. His death was confirmed to the school community, with the college paying tribute to a hugely respected member of its staff.
