Leicester Tigers back rower Emeka Ilione is set to be sidelined until the New Year after sustaining a shoulder injury in last weekend’s Gallagher PREM clash with Sale Sharks.
The 23-year-old was assessed and scanned following the narrow 36-35 victory, which saw him score a crucial second-half try. Ilione had featured in all five Premiership matches for the Tigers this season and had impressed with both his physical presence and vocal leadership on the field.
Leicester Tigers head coach Geoff Parling expressed his disappointment at the setback: “Unfortunately Emeka has sustained a shoulder injury that will keep him out for two to three months. I’m obviously bitterly disappointed for him as he has started the season strongly, was adding a great voice and intensity during training, and had just been called in to train with England.”
Ilione’s early-season form had marked him as one of Leicester’s standout performers, combining athleticism with growing experience in the Premiership. His performances had earned him a call-up to the England training squad ahead of the autumn internationals, highlighting his status as a promising uncapped back row prospect.
The injury, however, means Ilione will now miss the entire Autumn series, delaying his hopes of earning a first England cap. Despite this setback, Parling remains confident in the squad’s depth and believes Ilione will return to full fitness in time to make an impact in 2026.
The Tigers will look forward to welcoming back their talented back rower in the new year as they aim to continue their strong start to the Premiership season.
