Beyond The Pitch: Rugby stars who are qualified teachers - Greenwood, Lancaster, Scaratt & More

When England won the rugby world cup in 2003, Lancaster was a PE teacher in Wakefield, where he spent his days planning sports lessons and choosing teams to represent Kettlethorpe High School. Nine years on he was coaching the national team, but after a disappointing World Cup in 2015, he left his position and now works at Leinster.

The New Zealander currently coaches the Wallabies. In comparing his former job of teaching with coaching rugby union, Rennie said: "Teaching, coaching, it's the same thing. The kids are just a bit bigger."

The former Wales international, who won 13 caps between 1974 and 1983, was a highly respected school teacher. After starting his teaching career at Highdown School, the winger was head of rugby at Chiltern Edge School, then went on to become head of PE at Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School in London and later at Clifton College Prep School in Bristol.

In September 2000, after the former Wales international and British Lion stepped down as Director of Coaching for the Welsh Rugby Union, he joined the teaching staff at Monmouth School as a teacher of Religious Education and Director of Rugby Coaching.

Whilst playing for Bath, Robinson taught mathematics, physical education and rugby at Writhlington School, King Edward's School, Bath and later Colston's Collegiate School in Bristol, where he masterminded the school's Daily Mail Cup wins in 1995 and 1996. 'Robbo' then left to play rugby professionally with Bath.

Robinson later coached Bath before being appointed forwards coach of England and was deputy to Clive Woodward with the World Cup-winning England side in 2003. He was also a coach on the Lions tours in 2001 and 2005.

When Woodward resigned from the role of England coach in September 2004, Robinson was named as acting coach before being confirmed in the position. Robinson won just nine of his 22 matches in charge of England. He'd later coach Bristol, Edinburgh and Scotland.

The former England flanker, who is the father of World Cup winner Will Greenwood, won five international caps between 1966 and 1969. Outside rugby, Greenwood was the Assistant Bursar and also a geography teacher and head of rugby at Stonyhurst College.

The England women's star was a PE teacher at King Edward's School Birmingham, following in the footsteps of fellow England rugby international Natasha Hunt, but like many of her national teammates, she left her job in order to become a full-time professional rugby player. She famously lifted the Women's Rugby World Cup in 2014.

The 41-year-old is a former international Wales rugby union player, winning 17 caps for his country between 1997 and 2003. After his rugby career ended, the prop went on to be a primary school teacher.

Former England international Brian Ashton MBE has also been head coach of the England and Ireland national teams, which includes leading the men in white to the 2007 Rugby World Cup final. However, his original profession before going into coaching was teaching alongside his close friend Dick Greenwood, specifically history. He'd go onto teach future England international Kyran Bracken history.

The 72-year-old was a popular Scottish broadcaster, writer and former international rugby player, winning eight caps for the dark blues between 1968 and 1970. He is best known as a rugby union commentator for BBC Radio. However, he worked for four years as an English teacher at Fettes College, where his most famous pupil was Tony Blair.
