All Blacks legend sent death threats after controversial prediction

Ellis Park will host the first of four Tests in the series tomorrow, with the two top-ranked teams in world rugby, and favourites for next year's Rugby World Cup, set to go head-to-head.

Sopoaga, who won 16 caps for the All Blacks between 2015 and 2017, predicted New Zealand would win the series 2-1 across the three matches in South Africa. The fourth Test, which will take place in Baltimore, USA, was described by the former All Black as a "money grab".

The fly-half made his New Zealand debut in Johannesburg, scoring 12 points in a 27-20 victory over South Africa at Ellis Park.

He was also part of the All Blacks side that won in South Africa in 2017, kicking the decisive penalty in a 25-24 victory after Damian de Allende was sent off for a late hit on Sopoaga.

Speaking on The Big Jim Show alongside Jim Hamilton, Sopoaga reflected on the upcoming series and his experiences in South Africa, where he has travelled for the Tests. Before giving his prediction, he was keen to stress his respect for the Springboks.

"We respect these guys immensely, this country, this team, they are the number one team in the world for a reason, they're back-to-back reigning World Cup champions and they'll be protecting this land with everything they have."

Sopoaga then made his prediction, admitting he was speaking as a supporter and backing his own side to come out on top.

"I believe the All Blacks win 2-1 in South Africa. I say that as a fan and I just want to believe in my team and that's what I believe."

Despite the respectful nature of his comments, some South African supporters responded with abuse after he predicted their side would lose the series.

The former All Black was eventually forced to address the messages publicly, taking to Facebook to condemn the death threats and abuse.

"Hey guys just remember it’s just a game aye. Some of you in my DMs sending death threats and abusing the crap out of me, because I said I want my team to win 2-1 in SA. I love a bit of banter and back and forth but come on now it’s not that deep."
