All Blacks legend Brad Thorn takes on international coaching role in Europe

The World Cup winner and dual-code giant – with over two decades at the very top of the sport – will take on the role of Forwards and Strength & Conditioning Coach. Few men in world rugby carry the same pedigree: 59 caps for New Zealand, a Rugby World Cup crown in 2011, Super Rugby and NRL titles, plus a glittering European stint with Leinster. Thorn’s arrival is nothing short of a statement of intent for Maltese rugby.

He joins an equally impressive coaching lineup under the leadership of Dr Phil Pretorius, the newly appointed Head Coach. Pretorius boasts nearly 30 years of international experience, having coached Tonga, the Czech Republic, and over 200 Currie Cup games. His reputation as a team-builder and tactician is second to none.

Completing the trio is Jaike Carter, the current Malta Sevens Head Coach and a former international Sevens player. Carter, fresh from guiding Malta to bronze at the 2025 GSSE, will take charge of the backs – bringing pace, creativity, and proven success to the setup.

For Malta, the blend is mouthwatering: Pretorius’ tactical nous, Carter’s Sevens flair, and Thorn’s forward dominance forged in the fiercest arenas of the game.

The MRFU has made its ambition crystal clear – Malta is no longer here to make up the numbers. With this heavyweight coaching unit in place, the island nation is aiming to punch well above its weight on the European stage.
