Joe Launchbury appears to have brought forward his retirement after an emotional farewell following Harlequins’ 52-33 defeat to Sale Sharks.

The 35-year-old lock, who had planned to retire at the end of the season, was visibly emotional at full-time after coming on as a second-half replacement. He applauded supporters and took in the moment, suggesting it may have been his final appearance.

Launchbury had walked onto the pitch pre-match with his wife and children, adding to the sense of a farewell occasion. A social media post from his wife strongly suggested it was his last outing.

“The last game. ?❤️? It was an emotional day watching Joe play one more time. So much of our life has been focused around rugby and it feels very surreal that our weekends won’t be spent watching and supporting Joe playing. We are so proud of him and all that he has achieved.”
