Sexton was born in Rathgar, Dublin, but has family ties to North Kerry and West Clare; he is a nephew of former Garryowen, Munster and Ireland rugby player William Sexton.

Sexton married his childhood sweetheart Laura Priestly in 2013 after they met as teenagers.

Sexton, a lifelong Manchester United fan, said that he gains inspiration from Cristiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson over their career longevity.
