Gallagher Premiership teams on the hunt for a free transfer can still find a host of stars available for nothing with Newcastle Falcons snapping up Scotland international John Hardie this afternoon.
NOTE: Yes we did write the article this morning and had to change it just hours later (Darn you, John!)
But here are five other players still available:
1. Guy Mercer
Not even 20 months ago, Mercer was the club captain of Bath Rugby. But in August he has now left the team he grew up loving with two years left to run on a three-year contract.
A new club, at home or abroad, and a fresh start away could rejuvenate the tenacious flanker. He deserves a break. The best of luck to him.
2. Leonardo Sarto
The Italy winger is still a free agent after being released by Glasgow at the end of last season. He was injured up to the end of the season but then needed another operation keeping him now out until December. He still has no club. If someone can get him fit and firing, he'd be a great signing!
3. Michele Campagnaro
Exeter agreed to release Italy centre Michele Campagnaro earlier this week. He has scored nine tries in 27 matches since joining from Benetton in the summer of 2015 and helped the club win the Premiership title in 2016-17. The 25-year-old is expected to sign for Wasps but remains technically a free agent.
4. Tom Heathcote
5. Jeff Hassler
He wants to keep playing but he doesn’t have a contract after his departure from the Ospreys and that has forced him to contemplate a possibility that a power-packed player in his prime at 26 really shouldn’t be contemplating.
