2027 Rugby World Cup draw: Springboks face daunting path to the final

South Africa have learned their pool opponents and potential route to the final of the Rugby World Cup 2027 following the draw held in Sydney in December 2025.

Now, with it being April 2026, Rassie Erasmus’ Springboks are already deep into planning for a campaign that could see them make history with a third consecutive World Cup title, having reinforced their status after a dominant 73–0 win over Wales last year that featured 11 tries.

South Africa go into the tournament as one of the clear favourites alongside New Zealand, France and Ireland, and will expect to progress deep into the knockout stages if they navigate their group successfully.

Pool stage draw

South Africa have been drawn in Pool B alongside Italy, Georgia and Romania.

On paper, it is a favourable group for the reigning champions, with Italy expected to provide the main challenge for top spot. Georgia’s physicality and Romania’s set-piece strength could still pose problems, but South Africa will be confident of finishing first.
