Christian Wade backed to turn Newcastle Red Bulls around as wing returns from Rugby League stint

The winger’s league record only spanned across two fixtures, scoring a try in both, with a win against Huddersfield Giants, and a loss to Hull FC. However, in the Premiership, he is currently second in the all-time try standings, just nine tries off Chris Ashton.

Red Bulls head coach Alan Dickens hopes his own personal goal will help drive the team onwards: “I think he arrived in Newcastle over the weekend, and his first day was [Monday]. He’s someone who’s got an infectious character and someone that will bring a lot to the group.”

He continued: “One of the lads introduced him yesterday and kind of outlined [the Premiership try record] and I think he’s nine away from the record.”

Having only had eight weeks since Wigan’s Grand Final defeat at the hands of Hull KR, Wade has had a quick turn around to be ready for his Union return.

In regards to when he will feature for the Red Bulls, Dickens commented: “He’s not far off, so he has been training. He’s had his own trainer over the last five weeks since the end of the rugby league season.

“But it would be one of those, where we’ll drip feed him in over the next couple of weeks in preparation for those league fixtures over the Christmas/New Year period.”

Having started his rugby career all the way back in 2011, Wade has a vast amount of experience, which Alan Dickens will be hoping to get the most out of.

He commented: “Christian is a very diligent, very professional individual. Hence why he’s still playing and still performing at a higher level. So that’ll be assessed over the next couple of weeks.

“He’s professional. Whether or not that’s over his time in Union, his experience in American football, and also rugby league recently. So I’m sure he’s picked up a lot of good things and habits over the years.”

After the European window, the Premiership will return on 21st December as Newcastle host current Champions Bath. Dickens will hope to feature Wade in one of their toughest games of the season.
