Exeter Chiefs sign All Blacks centre from Crusaders

The midfielder from Methven has vivid memories of travelling north to watch Crusaders games with his family at Lancaster Park, and post-earthquake, Apollo Projects Stadium. To have the opportunity to make memories on the other side of the white line was a dream come true for Dallas.

As he embarks on his last season with the Crusaders, Dallas reflects on his time here with mixed emotions. “Honestly, it’s pretty bittersweet for me,” he says. “I grew up watching the Crusaders and it was always a goal to wear the red and black. To actually live that out has meant everything.”

Dallas had a breakthrough year in 2019 which set him on his path to the red and black. He was named vice-captain of the New Zealand team for the World Rugby Under 20 Championship. Later that year, he made his provincial debut for Canterbury. After his strong performance in the Mitre 10 Cup as a young midfielder full of promise, he earned his Crusaders selection in 2020.

After becoming a regular starter for the Crusaders in 2023, Dallas made his All Blacks debut in August 2023 against the Wallabies at Dunedin. He brought up his 50th Crusaders appearance in 2025 at home, a highlight he will always look back on with pride.

While fans will remember his explosive carries and his relentless work rate, Dallas will remember how special the environment is here; the kind where people always come first, and a place where everyone can be themselves. “I owe a lot to this club,” McLeod said.

“I’ve made some great mates along the way, and I’ll miss the people here a lot. That’s what makes this place special – they really look after you and always know how to get the best out of everyone who comes through this place.”

But as tough as it will be for the 26-year-old to leave, the next step carries real excitement for him.

“It’s a huge opportunity and I can’t wait for the next chapter,” he added. “It’ll be different, for sure, but I’m ready for it.” But before Dallas heads north, there’s still one season left in the red and black and one more chapter to write together.
